There’s a lot of Filipinos do love to write a story or poem that they relating some of their works to themselves and on what’s they’ve seen. One of the example is Jose Rizal, our national hero. Rizal really love to write stories, poems, and novel. Rizal’s works hooked Filipinos heart because it has a really ethical conflict and plot. Literature had a big impact in our history. Starting from high school Filipino stories that we learn for a whole quarter like Ibong Adarna, Florante at Laura, Noli Me Tangere, and El Filibusterismo as well as those tales and legends that were passed verbally through generations and generations. Those literary pieces has been in our culture and can be seen all throughout the country. Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo had the biggest impacts in our history. Dr. Rizal made them to awaken the patriotic hearts of the Filipino citizen. Which reeked havoc across the country and its people. Thus, the 1896 Philippine Revolution that sparked wars.

The symbols on the center of the spear is what we call baybayin. The original writing system of the Philippines. It is believed to be used in pre-colonial period wherein the Spaniards haven't set foot in our lands. The color variation of brown tones represent Filipino skin tones. The symbols on the spear represent tradition, it is the batuk tattoos from Kalinga. The spear represents the pre-colonial Filipinos armor used to fend off Spaniards in the Battle of Mactan. The literature that we have right now is a mixture of all the countries who colonized us, mostly the Spanish literature. LOGO: In this part, you can see that I made an optical art using many drawings of prominent people such as: Dr. Jose Rizal, Francisco Baltazar, GomBurZa, and Lola Basyang. I also made a drawing of things like: a sword, a gun and a bottle with leaking red ink (which is supposed to be a representation of blood). We can’t forget about the illusion art can’t we? If you observe the picture, it emphasizes a talking man. I purposely did that to point out that literature is not only about written works but is also expressed orally as well. Now let’s dig in deeper unto my drawing. First stop is Dr. Jose Rizal, every Filipino knows our national hero, Rizal, who fought with a pen instead of a sword. In this scenario, we can clearly say that literature is a powerful thing. Now let us go to the three Filipino Catholic priests (Ang Tatlong Paring Martir), namely: Padre Mariano Gomez, Padre Jose Burgos, and Padre Jacinto Zamora who inspired Rizal to write his second novel, ‘’The Reign of Greed’’, which is one of the instruments that arises the thoughts and emotions of freedom-thirsty Filipinos (some of them are Andres Bonifacio, Emilio Jacinto, Juan Luna and Gabriela Silang) to fight for our country. That also explains my drawing of a sword (representing a pen) striking the ink bottle that contains red ink (blood from all of our dear heroes). If you look closer at the side of the gun, you can see a smiling figure-which represents all of our colonizers (Spain, America, Japan)-and the sharp blade of the sword is pointing to them (which means that we, Filipinos, will not lose to them without a fight). You can also see a bird-like figure right in the sword’s handle, which represents our love of freedom. Next is Francisco Baltazar, he represents all of the great poets, authors, sonneteers, and many more writers that Philippines have. Next is Lola Basyang, let’s be real that when we were kids, we always heard the name Lola Basyang (specially his stories), this just represents the entertainment and lesson that we can get from literature-plus to also emphasize the fact that literature can also be heard and not only read. PART 1: Literature is such a powerful tool to use against someone. Philippines history cannot be this powerful and problematic without the literature. Let's start with the Spanish period. This period is one of the darkest times of the Philippines. Many Filipinos are starting to notice how bad this leadership is. In that terms, Dr. Jose Rizal created the novel called Noli mE Tangere(Touch me not) which tells the story of a man and his hardship on Spaniards' leadership. This novel also shows how bad Spanish colonialism is. When it was published, many Filipinos started to wake up about this evilness.

But it's not enough. Many Filipinos are still blinded and controlled by the Spaniards. So dr. Jose Rizal wrote a sequel for that novel called El Filibusterismo. This movement makes a big fuss and because of this, Filipinos get the freedom that they want.

PART I- If we don't have literature we have no knowledge of what had happened in the past. Because literature serves as an evidence of many memorable and differents historical events in the past that will serve as a great lesson in the present or in the future. And it allows people to learn more about where they came from and how past events work to shape the different cultures and traditions that Philippines have. The literature in the Philippines is predominantly a reflection of the influence of the Spaniards on the indigenous culture and traditions. The Philippines is unique for having important works in many languages.

Part 1:

If I were to be asked how literature influenced the history of the Philippines, then I will say that literature itself is the one who makes history for the Philippines. As Jose Rizal used literature or his novels like Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo to awaken the minds of our fellow Filipinos about the anomalies done by both of the Spanish government and church, it triggered the patriotism of our ancestors which make them desire to do reforms and fight for our country. By that, I can say that literature, especially the 2 novels, is the one who makes history for the Philippines as a country since it saved us from the hands of the Spanish colonizers and maybe from being a province of Spain. In addition, as literature becomes accountable of the records about our culture, tradition, and historical events, our ancestors learned to protect our own culture and tradition, learned to correct their mistakes during the Spanish colonization, and they did this by fighting the next colonizers which are Americans and Japanese that’s why I can say that a history of complete independence was given to our country.

Part 2:

Literature is not just accountable for holding the stories about the history of different countries but it is also one of the things that we can consider as our own treasure. That's why I use the gold color as the border of the shield since this treasure needs to be preserved and passed on to different generations. The black inner shield symbolizes our dark past from different colonizers, but above it is a red sword which symbolizes the courage of our ancestors, a blue sword that serves as their desire for peace, and in the middle of these two swords is a yellow book that means that the Philippine literature is the most powerful tool that our ancestors used to fight for our country’s independence from these colonizers. In line with this, the yellow book or the Philippine literature is the powerful tool since these literatures are the ones who directed a way for the 2 blinded people and opened up their eyes, minds, and patriotic hearts in order to fight together with the other Filipino ancestors during the colonization of other countries. Furthermore, as this yellow book opens, it scatters sun rays around, which means that we must share on to different generations our culture, tradition, and historical events which are inside different Philippine literature. And lastly, the yellow book or Philippine literature turns every Filipinos today into a Philippine Eagle who have sharp minds to think what is happening in the surroundings, who have courage especially to share what he/she think is right, and who have an ability to fly free on the sky like expressing our emotions and thoughts freely. However, even if the Philippine literature turns us into an awakened citizen and free individuals from our past, we should always look down and reflect from it so that history will not repeat itself and our culture will always be remembered. Overall, I will entitle my logo as the Golden Shield.

Literature in different periods brings growth and change to our country.

Literature has made significant contributions to the Philippine history over the years as it has been and continues to be used as a propaganda tool and has played a huge role in a major historical revolution. During the colonial period, Dr. Jose Rizal, our national hero who fought with the use of quill and paper, revived the nationalistic spirit and opened the eyes of every Filipinos who had been blinded by the power of the Spaniards. That led to revolution which returned the country to the hands of its true owners, none other than us, Filipinos. Literature helped us in reclaiming our land and rights as citizens. Up to the present time, it informs us what we should know about our country and even the years when the Spaniards owned us will be remembered as a disastrous yet beautiful part of our history. Indeed, literature mirrors not only the worst aspects in the past, but also the silver lining which allows us to experience the real world and appreciate the power of words.

There are various elements that you can see in my illustration having particular meanings that is related with Literature and Philippine Literary History. First, dove symbolizes freedom, which is given to writers in order for them to write according to what they want and let us know what we should know. Based on my understanding, Literature is the passport to enter a larger life; that is, the zone of freedom for both readers and writers. Dove also uses their powerful wings to fly and explore, which can be compared to our history as it produces periods with distinct events where we all can get lessons from. On the upper right of the paper, you can see a sun which means power and has the ability to nurture life. As we all know, literature holds the power to change one's self, reconfigure outlooks and imaginations, and understand our identity. Part 1
It influenced the history of the Philippines in the way literature shows how our
country conveys freedom without shedding a tear of blood, others showed the
exceptional traditions and cultures that existed in our country.

Part 2 (LEGACY)
It can always be seen everywhere, it might not be physically but the culture and
the perspective of a person affected by literature such as legends and folktales
and Modern literature consists of writers such as bloggers that can affect one’s
perspective specifically in midst of pandemic and political crisis. Literature can expand our humanity, it opens us into a new world wherein we can realize other’s
situation and open up our minds. Histories shows living from the past, it could
show the progress of how we end up living in this present era. This also shows
bravery of our national heroes such as Jose Rizal, he used his books without
shedding blood to attack colonizers. Literature helps us by uplifting our souls as
well as our moods by inspiring us to go on with our everyday living, in this case
scenario literature also saves our day. Literature acts as a time machine, we can
see the history of the past that could help us to apply it in certain circumstances
that will occur in the future.
