         <description><![CDATA[<div>Alert Student Services as soon as possible.&nbsp; Stop instruction at natural stopping point and pull student aside into hallway to check in.<br><br>Begin conversation with "how are we doing today?"<br><br>Some would defer immediately to student services but depends on relationship with student and how well you know student.<br><br><br>If actively bleeding - get bandage. gloves on. Consider sending to nurse.&nbsp; Call office when student out.<br><br>absolutely contact counselors.<br><br>freeze screen and webex counselors.&nbsp; Could be an instance of self-harm.&nbsp; Could send quick email.<br><br>if student actually in process of self-harm - give fidget, seek out time for conversation (stop instruction). be subtle - when other students are working.<br><br>during downtime, feign ignorance - hey, did you fall down?&nbsp; acknowledge that you see it - give them the opportunity to open up.<br><br>"Are you ok?" direct question.<br>Always alert counselors<br><br>In PE, try to get student apart from group to one on one. They want to be loved and hugged, but not in front of others.&nbsp; They are sending a message that they need help.</div>]]></description>

Understanding.<br>Extend time.&nbsp;<br>One on one to evaluate comprehension.&nbsp;<br>Accomodate.&nbsp;<br>Have them show their knowledge in some way.&nbsp;<br>Allow late work but require the work.&nbsp;<br><br>Loop in the counselors.&nbsp;<br><br>Know the kid and if this situation is real or not.&nbsp;<br><br>Paper options.&nbsp;<br><br>Accommodations.&nbsp;<br><br>Had a student tell them that. But student had a solution.&nbsp; Keep an eye on that kid.&nbsp;<br><br>Bring it to student services.&nbsp;<br><br>ALL. Working lunch.<br><br>Paper copies. Alternatives<br><br>Who's the student? Usually punctual? Pattern of lack of work.&nbsp;<br><br>Not just excused.&nbsp;<br><br>This is an alert to bigger situation.          <description><![CDATA[<div>call student out - ask them to define racism.&nbsp; What do they mean? What are they calling racist?<br><br>this is a teachable moment - let's have a conversation.<br><br>remind students that accusation of racism is very serious. Remind them that words matter - like yelling fire where there is no fire.<br><br>Depends on student/situation - but always ask them what they mean by that statement.&nbsp; creates constructive conversation.<br><br>PE teachers jump on the "around" word.&nbsp; We're just messing around? &nbsp; What does that mean?&nbsp; Make students explain.<br><br>point out how the "racist" accusation sounds to someone who does not know the context of the statement.<br><br>weigh whether better to call out behavior in front of everyone - make it a teachable moment for all students - or to pull student aside to be sure that they understand the gravity of the term<br><br><br></div>]]></description>

It won't go away and that is the same as passive acceptance.&nbsp;<br><br>Interject, regular discipline steps- talk in hall or stay after class.&nbsp;<br><br>Canvas changing their profile to be funny. Don't usually touch it because not too many people can see the canvas profile. Less attention. Don't give them any fuel.&nbsp;<br><br>Do you want people to respect you? Start there. Tell the kid they don't have to use a pronoun- use someone's name.&nbsp;<br><br>Don't ignore but don't give them attention. <br><br>address it directly as inappropriate and mean. Pull aside to explain how hurtful those comments can be. Follow up with consequences.&nbsp;<br><br>control the topic/situation</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In the moment, we can listen to the student and validate their feelings by saying something like, "I'm sorry you're feeling this way." Let them know that you can't make any decisions about student schedules. Ask them what they want to do about the situation? Do they just need to vent, or do they want to talk to Student Services.<br><br>Let Student Services know about the situation so that they can handle it with the student if appropriate.<br><br>You can talk to the other teacher if you have a good relationship with them but consider that the conversation may damage that relationship.<br><br>Counseling helps student find options that involve discussing with a teacher, a parent, or administration.<br><br>Ask students “what do you need?” “How can we help you?” Ask questions, not give answers.</div>]]></description>
