The textbook says, "The United States has developed a set of supports to help low-income families, seniors, children, and people with disabilities make ends meet and obtain health care" (Finance 10). Like the book said, these programs are designed to help those who struggle to financially support themselves on their own. These programs offer them things like money for food, food itself, healthcare, housing, and wage supplementation. These programs include the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit, Medicaid, CHIP, and SNAP. According to the book, "Public programs lifted 40 million people out of poverty in 2011, including almost 9 million children" (Finance 11). So, these programs clearly have a very big impact on the less fortunate in the United States.

SNAP stands for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. This is essentially a food stamp program, which works to get food to those who can't purchase or struggle to afford food. The textbook says, "Programs like SNAP (food stamps), the EITC and CTC,
and Medicaid support millions of low-income working families and help promote work" (Finance 11). SNAP can help keep families financially stable because by eliminating or reducing their need to purchase food, they are then able to put their income toward other things, like their mortgage, loans, or other debts as well as supporting their children. It takes a huge load off of the backs of those who already have a lot on their plate.

Medicaid

Medicaid helps the impoverished get quality medical care, which they would not be able to afford on their own. The book says, "Medicaid provided access to affordable health care to 66 million Americans in 2010" (Finance 11). By giving people access to medical care, they again allow them to put more money into the things that forced them into poverty in the first place, so they can try to get out. Also, if there is an emergency, it doesn't have to ruin everything that those already stressed people have worked for, as it also works to provide them with insurance. Good healthcare also means less illness and more work, which means more money and less poverty.

My Situation

Medicaid is a program that could potentially impact my financial situation. It is unlikely, but possible. If both of my parents were to lose their jobs, then we could possible have a serious cash flow issue. We may not be able to afford out healthcare plan anymore, as we would need to make cuts in order to afford the necessities. Medicaid could help us get healthcare and insurance, that way if something happened we wouldn't have to use all of our remaining savings to pay the medical bill. Also, it would keep our family healthy and enable my parents to get back to work as soon as possible.
