How is the diet in terms of nutrition?

While protein and fat are extremely important macromolecules in our diet, and should be consumed in adequate amounts daily it is not the only thing we should be consuming. This extremely strict diet consists of solely meats, and specific creams, milks, cheeses or butters if they meet the criteria. Protein itself is extremely important for the body because the amino acids that proteins are made up of help to build and repair muscle and bones, and fats are equally as important! So, undeniably, these macromolecules play a huge role in our health. However, we cannot simply live off of these two macromolecules alone. Carbohydrates play a huge role in our body’s health, and having the most energy we can to live, and do everyday tasks. Glucose is the main source of energy for our bodies cells, organs and tissues. So eliminating carbs would for the majority, leave many feeling tired or fatigued. Obviously this diet lacks many vitamins and minerals that can be found in produce. Living without or a lack of essential vitamins and minerals can be very dangerous, and lead to a variety of health issues. And one more thing this diet severely lacks is fiber. Found in produce, as well as complex carbs such as whole grain products, fiber is so important for our bodies. We need fiber to regulize our bowel movements, lower cholesterol, and control our blood sugar. Living without it would do much more harm than good. Overall, eating too much meat and fats can be dangerous. High in salt, and fat, it can easily spike our blood sugar and raise our cholesterol through the roof.

Why would this diet lead to poor mental health?

This influencer claims to have improved mental health and anxiety in the span of a week. Within a week, no diet would be able to show noticeable results as he claims, but more commonly, diets tend to make someone more anxious and mentally stressed. Not even focusing on the carnivore diet in particular, a diet tends to be extremely mentally difficult. It's hard, focusing on what you can and can't eat, when and what exercises to do, and everything usually gets extremely overwhelming and overbearing. A diet usually means cutting foods out of your life, foods you once enjoyed every so often. For this diet, basically every food is off limits if it is not strictly poultry or dairy. Protein and fats. This can be harmful because a study from UMICH shows that 35% of diets lead to eating disorders. It is something that consumes your mind, becomes obsessive, and begins to take over your life. This can have serious effects on ones mental health, and it can be extremely dangerous. Another fact is that this diet seriously lacks vitamins and minerals. Vitamins and minerals which our brain needs to function properly, and to regulate our mood. And finally, limiting carbs severely can cause your body to break down fat into ketones for energy. This is called ketosis. Ketosis can cause side effects such as headache, fatigue, low energy and weakness.

Will the carnivore diet help you lose weight or ‘get leaner’?

Another claim this influencer has made is that this diet has 'instantly' made him leaner. Again, that already seems farfetched with the 'instant' results, but it is definitely a strong claim. What he is saying has some partial truth to it. The Carnivore diet consisting of poultry and animal derived fats can be beneficial for the reason that these foods could lower insulin levels, potentially help to lose fat, and ultimately lose weight. However, for most that is not the case. Getting leaner or losing weight does not typically depend on the foods you are eating. It does however depend on the amount of calories you are consuming. If someone on this diet is consuming an excess amount of calories, regardless of where they are from, they are going to gain weight. And for foods such as poultry and dairy, which are loaded with fats, and high in calories (9 calories per g of fat), it can be easy to over eat. Another factor that could hinder weight loss would be the evident nutrient imbalance. Essential nutrients found in produce and grains such as fiber and vitamins play a crucial role for our overall health and metabolism. A nutrient deffiency could slow our metabolism. And long term, this does not in the slightest seem sustainable, so any potential success that follows with it could be easily destroyed because of this extremely restrictive diet.

Would you really stop bloating on this diet?

Brody claims to have completely stopped bloating within a week of his diet. This is extremely stretched and misinforming. First, this diet is absolutely packed with sodium which can already leads to many health issues, but in terms of bloating, sodium may cause bloating as the body retains more water when a person consumes too much. It helps your body retain water, so extra fluid builds up. People who eat this diet are eating excessive amounts of sodium, well over the recommended intake, and as we've seen, this can cause water weight. Another factor to add to this is that this diet immensely lacks fiber. Fiber is the key to having proper, regulated bowel movements. It adds bulk to stool and helps it move through the digestive tract easier, without this, issues can occur. Lack of fiber will cause irregular bowel movements and will inevitably lead to bloating. In addition to bloating, this can be extremely uncomfortable and will most likely leave you constipated as well.

How would the carnivore diet have an impact on the environment?

The carnivore diet, which focuses solely on eating only animal products, can harm the environment in several ways. Raising animals for meat produces a lot of greenhouse gases, such as methane and carbon dioxide, which ultimately contribute to climate change. It also leads to deforestation because more land is needed for pastures and to grow animal feed, which destroys habitats and reduces biodiversity. Livestock farming uses a lot of water and often pollutes water sources with manure and chemicals. Producing meat is less efficient than growing plants, requiring more energy and resources. Overgrazing by animals can damage soil, leading to erosion and loss of fertile land. Lastly, managing waste from livestock farms can be challenging and harmful to the environment.

The carnivore diet could negatively impact the economy in various ways. The increased demand for animal products would likely drive up prices for meat and dairy, making these staples less affordable for many people. This could also put a strain on agricultural resources, as more land, water, and feed would be needed to support livestock production, potentially leading to higher costs for farmers and food producers. Also, the environmental damage caused by intensive animal farming, such as deforestation and water pollution, could result in increased expenses for environmental restoration and healthcare costs related to pollution and diet-related illnesses. These factors could strain public resources and divert funds from other crucial areas, leading to broader economic challenges.
