Ethical Dilemma 4: Confidentiality vs. Safety

Alan, who works in a hospital’s claims department, finds out that one of his daughter’s teachers has been treated for anxiety and mood swings after a mugging. He’s worried about the teacher’s mental health but also knows he’s legally bound to keep all patient information confidential.

This puts Alan in a tough spot — as a professional, he must protect the teacher’s privacy, but as a parent, he’s anxious about his daughter’s safety. The right thing to do here is to respect confidentiality and not reveal what he knows. Breaking that trust could destroy the teacher’s career and violate ethical and legal standards.

Instead, Alan can act responsibly by quietly keeping an eye on his daughter’s classroom experience and talking to the school only if any real concerns arise — without mentioning anything about the teacher’s medical history. He should remember that getting treatment actually shows responsibility, not instability.

So, Alan can reconcile both roles — by being a careful father and an ethical professional.

The Greater Good vs. Personal Duty by Arjun S - 2022105703

This scenario, often called the "Drawbridge Dilemma," presents a powerful conflict between two core ethical ideas: maximizing well-being for the largest group and fulfilling a profound personal duty to a loved one.

The man faces two possible actions, each with a devastating outcome:

Action 1: Raise the bridge. This choice saves the lives of everyone on the boat, preventing a large-scale tragedy. The outcome produces the greatest good for the greatest number of people. However, it requires the father to actively sacrifice his own son, a horrific and deeply personal loss.

Action 2: Do not raise the bridge. This choice saves his son, fulfilling his role as a parent and protector. However, this action knowingly leads to the deaths of many innocent people on the boat, causing a greater amount of overall suffering and loss of life.

The central ethical problem is whether a universal obligation to save many lives should override the specific, deeply felt obligation to protect one's own child. From a standpoint focused on outcomes, the logical choice is to raise the bridge, as it minimizes the total loss of life. The death of one person, however tragic, is a better outcome than the deaths of many. This forces a decision between an impersonal calculation for the "greater good" and the powerful, personal bonds of family.

by

    Arjun - 2022105703 [ ECE ]

Alan 's Conflict Between Professional Confidentiality and Personal Responsibility

Case Summary

Alan, who works in the claims department of a hospital, discovers that a patient admitted for anxiety and mood swing treatment after a traumatic incident is his daughter’s grade school teacher. He feels conflicted between maintaining patient confidentiality and concern for his daughter’s safety at school.

Ethical Principles Involved

1. Confidentiality:Patient information is private and must not be shared or used for personal purposes.

2. Conflict of Interest:Alan’s professional responsibilities conflict with his personal role as a parent.

3. Professional Integrity:Maintaining trust and following ethical guidelines are essential in healthcare roles.

4. Nonmaleficence:Alan must ensure that his actions do not cause harm to the patient or violate her privacy.

Ethical Analysis

Alan cannot disclose or use confidential patient information, regardless of personal concerns. The fact that the teacher is receiving treatment for anxiety does not make her unfit to teach or pose any proven risk to his daughter. Acting on this information would be unethical and could have serious consequences for Alan and the hospital.

Possible Ethical Actions

1. Maintain confidentiality and not reveal the patient’s medical information.

2. Request to be reassigned or excused from handling the patient’s file to avoid a conflict of interest.

3. If still concerned as a parent, observe the teacher’s behavior at school and raise issues with the school administration only if there are legitimate, non-confidential reasons.

4. Seek advice from the hospital’s ethics committee or compliance officer on how to handle the situation properly.

Conclusion

Alan should maintain confidentiality, withdraw from handling the patient’s case, and deal with any parental concerns through normal school channels without using confidential information. By doing so, he upholds professional ethics, protects patient privacy, and maintains personal integrity.

SUBMITTED BY,

     ABIELA MARIA Y (2022105503)

In this dilemma, a man operating a drawbridge brings his son along to work one night. When a boat approaches, the man has to raise the bridge but he realizes his son is trapped in the gears. If he raises the bridge, his son will die. If he doesn’t, the boat full of people will crash and many will lose their lives.

This is an incredibly painful situation because it’s not just about logic it’s about emotion, love, and moral responsibility. On one hand, saving the people on the boat follows a utilitarian view, where you choose the option that saves more lives. On the other hand, as a father, the instinct to protect your own child is too strong to ignore.

My Take:
If I were in his place, I honestly don’t know how I could make that decision. But thinking practically, I’d say the bridge should be raised, because letting so many people die would be something impossible to live with. Still, the emotional weight of sacrificing his own son is unimaginable. This dilemma shows that sometimes ethics isn’t just about right or wrong it’s about how deeply human feelings can complicate moral choices.

By:

Nithish Reddy KVS

2022105065

ECE

Solution:

In this tragic dilemma, the man faces an impossible choice between saving his son and saving the lives of many people on the approaching boat. Morally, he is torn between his duty as a father and his responsibility as the bridge operator. A utilitarian view would urge him to raise the bridge, sacrificing his son to save many lives, while a deontological or virtue-based view might argue that a parent’s duty to protect their child is sacred, even if others are harmed as a result. In such a moment, the most humane response would be for the man to desperately attempt every possible action to save both—warning the boat, halting the bridge, or freeing his son. But if no alternative remains and a decision must be made in seconds, either choice brings unbearable pain: raising the bridge saves many but destroys his heart, while keeping it down saves his son but costs others their lives. Ultimately, this dilemma shows that in some situations, every choice carries tragedy, and true morality lies not in the outcome but in the compassion and intent behind the decision.

TARINI R

2022105533

The man’s moral responsibility is to perform his duty faithfully to ensure the safety of everyone on the river. His obligation as the operator is to raise the bridge when needed, even though it tragically means losing his son. Morality here depends on doing one’s duty, not on the emotional outcome.

However, if he is a responsible father, he also has a duty to think ahead about potential dangers. Bringing his child to such a risky environment means he should have acted more carefully, ensuring his son’s safety before the situation ever occurred. A truly ethical person does not just react to moral crises they work to prevent them.

This dilemma reveals the painful conflict between personal love, moral duty, and responsibility. The tragedy lies not only in his choice, but in the lack of foresight that forced him into it.

Ethics is not only about choosing between two evils it is also about avoiding the circumstances that make such choices necessary.

In this dilemma, a man who operates a drawbridge brings his young son to work one winter night. When the signal horn sounds to let a boat pass, the man realizes his son has accidentally gotten caught in the bridge’s gears. If he raises the bridge, his son will be crushed to death. If he doesn’t, the approaching boat full of passengers will crash and many will die in the icy river.

This dilemma presents a painful moral conflict between utilitarian ethics (saving the greater number of lives) and deontological ethics (the moral duty to protect one’s loved one and not intentionally cause harm). From a utilitarian perspective, the operator should raise the bridge to save the people on the boat — sacrificing one life to save many. However, from a deontological and emotional viewpoint, it is morally unbearable to intentionally end one’s own child’s life, no matter the reason.

My Perspective:

In this situation, I believe there is no truly “right” answer only a heartbreaking choice between duty and love. As a human being, emotional instincts would push the man to save his son, while his professional and moral responsibility would compel him to save the passengers. If I were in his place, I would act to save the people on the boat, though it would leave a permanent scar. Choosing the greater good may be ethically justified, but it also reminds us that real-life ethics are filled with emotional pain, not just logical reasoning.

By:

Kavya G

2022105548

ECE

In this moral dilemma, a man who runs a drawbridge has to decide whether to save his stuck son or to lift the bridge in order to save the individuals on a boat coming towards him. If he raises it, his son will perish. If he doesn't, people on the boat can be killed.

This compels a profound internal conflict between love and right conduct. Saving his son would save someone whom he loves most dearly, but allowing the boat to wreck would mean losing many people. Raising the bridge would mean sacrificing his son to preserve many people.

From a greater good point of view, raising the bridge is the morally correct thing to do, although it inflicts such personal agony. Emotionally, the urge to rescue his own child is strong and therefore understandable, and the decision is therefore very hard to make.

My Perspective:

I think that the man needs to lift the bridge to rescue the individuals on the boat. It's a tragic decision, but it's the more ethical thing to do to save more lives. This illustrates that the right thing to do is frequently difficult, but at times, it means putting others ahead of one's own loss.

By

P.Niranjan

2022105040

ECE

Alan works in the claims department of a major hospital. Paperwork on a recent admission shows that a traumatic mugging caused the patient to require an adjustment in the medication she is prescribed to control anxiety and mood swings. Alan is struck by the patient’s unusual last name and upon checking her employment information realizes she is one of his daughter’s grade school teachers.

Alan’s daughter seems very happy in her school and he cannot violate patient confidentiality by informing the school of a teacher’s mental illness but he is not comfortable with a potentially unstable person in a position of influence and supervision over his eight-year-old daughter. Can Alan reconcile these issues in an ethical manner?

My solution :

To handle this situation the right way, Alan needs to keep his job duties and personal feelings separate. He should not share or use the private medical information he came across at work. If he feels uneasy about his daughter’s teacher, he can take simple and ethical steps as a parent without breaking any rules. For instance, he can visit the school more often, watch how the teacher interacts with students, or talk to the school administration about his daughter’s overall classroom experience — without mentioning anything about the teacher’s health. If he ever notices something unusual or worrying, he can raise it through normal school channels, based only on what he actually sees, not on the confidential information he knows.

Alan should also remember that having a mental health condition does not mean someone cannot do their job well. Many people with anxiety or mood-related issues lead normal, successful lives and manage their conditions with proper care and treatment. The right thing for Alan to do is to keep the patient’s information private, stay true to his professional ethics, and keep an eye on his daughter’s experience at school like any caring parent would. By doing this, Alan can balance his responsibilities — protecting his daughter while still respecting the teacher’s privacy and maintaining his honesty at work.

I think Brad and Mike should be punished for disobeying the coach’s clear rule, but in a way that does not harm the entire team. The coach's effort should be in correcting their behavior, not destroying the teams collective effort. Every mistake is also a chance for learning and growth.

Jeff can act responsibly by giving them consequences that make them realize the seriousness of their actions( such as extra training, taking leadership responsibilities in practice, or publicly apologizing to the team ) instead of suspending them for the entire week. This ensures accountability while keeping the spirit of teamwork alive.

The ethical decision here is not just about enforcing a rule, but about guiding his players to become more responsible and respectful individuals.

This situation reflects the balance between responsibility and accountability. Jeff’s responsibility as a coach is to maintain discipline, fairness, and team unity. Brad and Mike, on the other hand, must be held accountable for their actions so they learn that leadership and privilege come with commitment. By choosing a punishment that teaches them than affecting the entire team Jeff fulfills his responsibility while helping the players accept accountability in a constructive way.
Baileyville Highschool Team - Coaching Ethics Dilemma

Daksshin 2022109021

2. The mood at Baileyville High School is tense with anticipation. For the first time in many, many years, the varsity basketball team has made it to the state semifinals. The community is excited too, and everyone is making plans to attend the big event next Saturday night. Jeff, the varsity coach, has been waiting for years to field such a team. Speed, teamwork, balance: they've got it all. Only one more week to practice, he tells his team, and not a rule can be broken. Everyone must be at practice each night at the regularly scheduled time: No Exceptions. Brad and Mike are two of the team's starters. From their perspective, they're indispensable to the team, the guys who will bring victory to Baileyville. They decide—why, no one will ever know—to show up an hour late to the next day's practice.

Jeff is furious. They have deliberately disobeyed his orders. The rule says they should be suspended for one full week. If he follows the rule, Brad and Mike will not play in the semifinals. But the whole team is depending on them. What should he do?

Brad and Mike should be allowed to play but still face consequences. Their lateness was wrong but removing them from the semifinals would punish the whole team. Discipline should correct behavior and not destroy team morale. The coach could require them to apologize, lead team duties, and sit out the first quarter as a fair penalty They may also be given punishment outside the match, like volunteering in junior matches and other club activities. This approach keeps respect for rules while preserving the team’s unity and chance for victory.

Problem 1

Based on the deontological perspective, it is never morally acceptable to intentionally kill an innocent person, regardless of the outcome. Therefore, I believe using the dynamite to save the group would be wrong, since it would mean directly causing the pregnant woman's death. The right thing to do is to respect her fundamental right to life, even if it results in everyone else drowning. Moral actions should be guided by absolute rules, not consequences. We must not become agents of harm, and in this case, no person's life should be sacrificed for the sake of others, no matter how difficult that choice may be.

Rohith V

2022104315

What does Tony do in this situation?

Answer:

Both Tony and Robert have violated the company's rules.

5. A man runs a drawbridge. His job is to lower and raise the draw bridge when the boats come through. One winter night, he decides to bring his son to work with him. His son is young and very curious about how things work. In an unfortunate turn of events, the son becomes a bit to curious and is exploring the gears of the drawbridge, when suddenly the horn sounds letting the man know a boat is coming, and he must raise the bridge. He realizes his son is caught in the gears by his shirt, but the boat is fast approaching and it is full of people. If the man raises the bridge, the gears will crush his son. If the man does not raise the bridge, the people on the boat will crash into it, and no doubt some of them will die in the icy river. Does the man risk the lives of the people on the boat to save his son? Or does he risk crushing his own son to keep all of the people on the boat safe?

The ethical dilemma of the drawbridge operator involves a difficult choice between saving many passengers on a train and protecting the operator’s own son caught in the gears. This dilemma highlights conflict between utilitarian ethics and deontological ethics.

From a utilitarian perspective, the man should lower the drawbridge, sacrificing his son to save the lives of many passengers. This view focuses on the outcome that results in the greatest good for the greatest number.

From a deontological standpoint, the man should not actively cause harm to his son, as it violates the moral duty to protect innocent life. Intentionally allowing death as a means to an end is considered morally wrong.

In this case, the morally justifiable action is to lower the drawbridge to save the many lives, even though it results in personal loss. This decision reflects the ethical principle of taking responsibility for the greater community’s welfare, despite the painful consequence.

The dilemma shows that ethical decisions often involve tragic choices where no option is free from harm. It teaches the importance of courage and sacrifice in ethical leadership.

It addresses the serious conflict of interest posed by Robert's gambling, which is a major threat to a casino's integrity. However, it requires Tony to admit to his own misconduct (accessing Robert's computer) and face almost certain disciplinary action.

* Confront Robert Privately :This is an attempt to solve the problem informally. It gives Robert a chance to stop, but it's risky. There's no guarantee Robert will comply, and he could even report Tony to save himself. By not reporting the issue, Tony remains complicit and leaves the company at risk.

* Do Nothing :This path of avoidance protects Tony from immediate consequences. However, it makes him complicit in a cover-up. If Robert's gambling is discovered later, Tony's failure to report it could lead to even more severe consequences, likely termination for both the IT breach and the cover-up.

My Perspective

The best, though most difficult, choice is to report Robert and admit his own mistake.

The two violations are not equal. Tony's was a breach of IT policy; Robert's threatens the core integrity of the business. The duty to protect the company from the greater harm must come first.

The most ethical approach is for Tony to go to HR, explain the situation transparently, and accept the consequences for his actions. He should state that he made a serious error in judgment by accessing the computer but felt compelled to report the more critical violation. This demonstrates accountability and prioritizes the company's well-being, which may mitigate the punishment for his own lapse.

At Baileyville High School, the excitement is electric ,for the first time in years, the varsity basketball team has reached the state semifinals. The players, students, and the entire community have been waiting for this moment. Their coach, Jeff, has poured years of effort into building this team. Every practice, every drill, every rule has brought them here.

Then, two star players, Brad and Mike, decide to arrive late to practice, deliberately ignoring the one rule Jeff made clear: no exceptions.
The rulebook says they must be suspended for a week, which means missing the semifinals — a loss that could cost the team their long-awaited victory.

Now Jeff faces an agonising decision.
Should he strictly enforce discipline and suspend the two players, proving that rules and respect come before winning?
Or should he bend the rules for the sake of the team, allowing them to play and possibly bring glory to the school and community?

This situation tests the very heart of ethics in leadership.
If Jeff chooses discipline, he upholds fairness and integrity, showing that no one is above the rules. But if he lets them play, he prioritises loyalty to his team and the dreams of many, over strict justice.

Both choices carry consequences:

If he suspends them: The team may lose, and the community may turn against him.

If he lets them play: He risks undermining his authority and setting a precedent that rules don’t matter.

This dilemma highlights the tension between principle and compassion, justice and mercy, leadership and loyalty.

Conclusion

Coach Jeff should uphold the rules and suspend Brad and Mike, even if it means losing the semifinals. By doing so, he demonstrates that true leadership is not about winning at any cost, but about maintaining fairness, integrity, and respect. Breaking the rule for the sake of victory would send the wrong message to the team, that talent is above discipline. Though it may be a painful choice in the short term, it builds long term values like honesty, commitment, and teamwork. Real success lies not just in trophies or championships, but in shaping individuals who stand by principles even when it’s hard.

True victory comes not from winning the game, but from doing what is right.

Upon doing so, Tony sees an open email regarding gambling bets Robert placed over the last several days with a local sports book. All employees of the casino are forbidden to engage in gambling activities to avoid any hint of conflict of interest.

Tony knows he should report this but would have to admit to violating the company’s information technology regulations by logging into Robert’s computer. If he warns Robert to stop his betting, he would also have to reveal the source of his information. What does Tony do in this situation?

My Response:

Tony has two options: report the problem or remain silent. He and Robert can both avoid difficulty right away if he doesn't speak, but it's not the correct thing to do. If the business discovers the truth, it could lead to more serious issues down the road. In the long run, this preserves his integrity and demonstrates accountability.

That's the scorecard telling me to pull the lever. He's my blood. He's one person, but he's my one person. If I pull the lever, I am the one who crushes him. It's an active decision to end my own child's life. If I leave the bridge down, I'm letting an accident happen to strangers. I'm not doing the killing.

When you're under pressure like that, you don't think about ethics textbooks or the number of people involved; you react to the immediate threat and the personal connection.

You don't actively sacrifice your own kid for anyone, no matter how many people are on the boat. That's the difference between a tough decision and a betrayal. I'd rather face the consequences of a tragic accident on the river than be the man who chose to kill his own son.

I'm not touching that lever. I'm saving my son.

Problem 5 - ''The Drawbridge Dilemma'' (Vanessa Rebello 2022108026)

This ethical dilemma revolves around a man who must choose between saving his own son or saving the lives of many passengers on a fast-approaching boat. The situation pits deep parental love against the moral responsibility to protect the greater number of lives.

My Perspective:

In this heartbreaking situation, the man faces the impossible choice between saving his son or saving many innocent people on a boat. From my perspective, although it is emotionally devastating, the man should raise the bridge. Choosing to save the greater number of lives reflects selflessness and moral courage. While losing his son would cause unbearable pain, allowing many others to die would create an even greater tragedy. This decision shows how ethical duties often demand extreme personal sacrifice, where the right choice is not the easiest one.

Principles Involved:

The main ethical principle guiding this scenario is utilitarianism, which focuses on achieving the greatest good for the greatest number. By raising the bridge, the man prevents multiple deaths, even though it results in one profound loss.
Another key principle is moral responsibility — the duty to act in a way that protects others from harm, especially when one has the power to prevent it. This dilemma also touches on deontological ethics, which would argue that killing (even indirectly) is always wrong, highlighting the emotional and moral complexity of the choice.

Conclusion:

This dilemma teaches that ethical decisions often come with painful consequences, where doing the “right thing” can still cause deep personal loss. The father’s sacrifice, though tragic, reflects true moral integrity — prioritizing the lives of many over his own emotional attachment. It reminds us that ethics is not always about choosing between right and wrong, but between two deeply difficult choices, where compassion and responsibility must guide our actions.

In this situation, Tony, a data analyst at a casino, finds himself stuck between two tough choices. While working late one night to finish an important project, he realizes he’s missing some data that had been sent to his coworker Robert. A few days earlier, Tony had accidentally seen Robert typing his password. Out of desperation to meet his deadline, Tony uses that password to log into Robert’s computer to get the data he needs.

While doing this, he comes across an open email showing that Robert has been placing bets with a local sportsbook. This is a serious issue because casino employees are strictly forbidden from gambling to avoid any conflict of interest.

Now Tony faces a real ethical dilemma. If he reports what he saw, Robert will get in trouble — but so will Tony for accessing Robert’s account without permission. If he decides to warn Robert privately, he’d still have to admit how he found out, which again points back to his own mistake. And if he stays silent, he’s allowing a serious violation of company policy to continue.

None of the options are easy. But the most responsible thing Tony can do is to be honest and report the situation to the appropriate department, even if it means facing consequences himself. This shows integrity, accountability, and respect for the company’s rules. It’s not an easy choice, but it’s the right one in the long run.

My perspective, if I were in Tony’s position, is that this situation is an ethical dilemma where two wrongs are involved. On one hand, Tony clearly violated company policy by logging into Robert’s computer using a password he wasn’t authorized to know. On the other hand, Robert is also breaking a serious company rule by engaging in gambling, which could harm both the casino’s reputation and create a conflict of interest.

If I were Tony, the most ethical thing to do would be to step aside and not handle it directly. Instead, I would report the matter—without stating how I obtained the information—to the responsible authority like HR or compliance. Other than stating, "I went into Robert's computer and noticed this," Tony can simply express concern by indicating that Robert's activities could be reviewed. By doing this, the issue is brought to notice, but it remains for the compliance group to enquire using their own authorized channels.

It is also necessary for Tony to consider his own error. Although his original intention was to finish his project, he improperly accessed confidential information. He must be ready to take responsibility if his action ever becomes questioned.

So, the balance here is to preserve the company's integrity without attempting to cover up or to confront Robert in a manner that reveals Tony's error. Reporting via the appropriate internal channel—without excessive explanation of how the data was discovered—is the most professional and ethical course of action.

Santhiya - 2022701034

B.arch

If I were in that situation, I honestly don’t think there could ever be a decision that feels right. On one hand, if we use the dynamite, we’d be directly taking a life — and not just one, but two, since the woman is pregnant. On the other hand, if we don’t act, everyone else in the cave, including possibly children or families, would die. It’s one of those moments where every option feels morally unbearable.

Personally, I think I would choose not to use the dynamite. Taking someone’s life intentionally, even to save others, crosses a line that would never leave me in peace. It’s not just about numbers it’s about moral responsibility. If I choose to kill her, I become the direct cause of her death. But if I don’t, then the situation itself nature, the tide, the cave becomes the cause of everyone’s fate.

I’d rather live with the guilt of not being able to save everyone than carry the weight of having actively killed an innocent person, especially one who trusted me as their leader. It’s tragic either way, but sometimes being human means accepting that not every problem has a solution that feels just.

1) Reporting Robert's activity aims to stop the greater source of harm immediately and uphold the system that benefits all employees by maintaining the casino's ethical and legal standards. Tony's action of logging into Robert's computer, while a violation of IT policy, was done to complete an important project and retrieve important missing data.

2) If he warns Robert to stop betting, Tony avoids punishment for breaching IT policy. He will also maintain his working relationship with Robert. But by doing so, it may allow for continued unethical and illegal activity by Robert. If the company later finds out, he may be punished for not reporting. It also violated company policy and integrity. It may tarnish the company name.

My Decision:

Going by the first point, Tony should report the gambling incident through the proper channels and admit his mistake.

I can’t imagine how painful that moment would be a father standing there, realizing that whatever he does, someone will die. It’s the kind of situation that tears your heart apart before you can even think clearly. If it were me, I think instinct would take over before logic. My first reaction would be to save my son he’s my child, a part of me. No one could expect a parent to willingly crush their own child, even if it means saving others. It’s not that the people on the boat don’t matter, but in that split second, love and emotion would outweigh reason. But if I step back and think about it truly think I know that the father’s duty is to protect life, not just his own family’s. Choosing to save his son would mean allowing many innocent people to die, people with families of their own waiting at home. In the long run, that guilt would destroy him. So painfully, I believe the ethical choice would be to raise the bridge, even if it means losing his son. It’s not the “right” choice emotionally, but it’s the morally heavier but selfless one. True love sometimes means unbearable sacrifice doing what’s right, not what feels right.

From my perspective, the coach Jeff has to analyze how sincere they are towards the varsity team and to evaluate if they are dedicated by giving them some chance in the practice matches and how they coordinate along with the team. If they are really interested to play for the team, they would be sorry for their actions and would have apologized their coach. As per the context, they have deliberately disobeyed the orders and they have to find the grounds for that. If it was just for personal disagreements between the coach and the two players then the coach should be replaced temporarily. Or else, Jeff could confidently go on with suspending Brad and Mike. My final verddict would be to go on and suspend them.

Disclosing her condition to the school would be a serious violation of this law. The ethical solution is for Alan to recuse himself from handling the teacher’s file and inform his supervisor of the personal connection to avoid conflict of interest. If he is worried about his daughter’s safety, he can raise general concerns with the school without mentioning the teacher’s private health details, thus maintaining both personal integrity and professional ethics at the same time.

This powerful and emotional story presents a tragic moral dilemma that forces a man to make an almost impossible decision. As the operator of a drawbridge, his job is to raise the bridge to allow boats to pass safely underneath. One cold winter night, he brings his young and curious son to work. In a terrible twist of fate, the boy gets caught in the gears of the bridge just as a boat full of people approaches. The man is faced with a devastating choice: if he raises the bridge to let the boat pass, the gears will crush his son. But if he keeps the bridge down to save his child, the boat will crash, likely killing or injuring many innocent people on board. This situation raises deep ethical and emotional questions — is it ever justifiable to sacrifice one life, especially someone you love deeply, to save many others? The story explores the painful conflict between personal love and the greater good, and it reminds us that sometimes, real-life decisions don’t have a clear “right” answer. It forces us to confront the value of individual life, the weight of responsibility, and the heart-wrenching cost of doing what might be considered the morally right thing.

From a critical thinking perspective, the utilitarian approach supports using the dynamite to save the greatest number of people, despite the tragic loss. However, it also raises profound questions about the morality of actively causing harm, the rights of the vulnerable, and respect for human dignity. The pregnant woman as a leader and mother adds emotional depth and responsibility to the decision. Ultimately, such dire situations require courage, empathy, and collective decision-making, trying to balance survival with compassion while acknowledging the inevitability of loss. It's a painful reminder of how morally complex real-life emergencies can be, where sometimes even the best choice comes with a heavy price.

People often face difficult choices, much like the drawbridge dilemma, where the decision involves weighing harm and virtue. In real life, similar situations happen—such as emergency responders choosing whom to save first, or leaders deciding on policies that affect many. While there’s no perfect solution, the key is to act with compassion and reason. Sometimes, the hardest choice is to do what benefits the most people, even if it involves personal pain. It’s important to think about the consequences, but also to recognize that moral decisions are complex and often require accepting heartbreak for the greater good.

This action will result in the death of the pregnant woman, but it is the only way to prevent everyone else in the cave from drowning. This choice saves the largest number of lives.

The High School Basketball Team: The coach, Jeff, should not suspend Brad and Mike from the semifinal game. While the players deliberately disobeyed his orders, suspending them would damage the team's chances of winning the state semifinals. A victory would bring significant happiness to the entire team, the school, and the community, which has been excitedly anticipating the event. The happiness of the many outweighs the need to strictly enforce the rule in this specific instance.

The Casino Data Analyst: Tony should warn Robert to stop his betting. While Tony would have to admit he improperly accessed Robert’s computer, this course of action allows the unethical gambling—a violation of company policy—to be addressed and stopped. It avoids the more severe consequences of a formal report, which would harm both Robert and Tony, while still correcting the wrongdoing.

The Hospital Claims Worker: Alan must not inform the school about the teacher's condition. Although he is concerned about his eight-year-old daughter being supervised by a person he perceives as "potentially unstable", he cannot violate patient confidentiality. Breaking this rule would cause direct harm to the teacher's career and privacy and would undermine the trust essential for the healthcare system to function, which benefits society as a whole.

The Drawbridge Operator: The man must raise the drawbridge. This action will tragically result in the death of his son, who is caught in the gears.

From the perspective of Jeff, it seems like they have deliberately disobeyed his orders. But he can try to communicate with them about why they actually did not show up for practice. If their reasons seem valid enough, he can give them a chance. Jeff could choose a balanced approach to handle the situation. Instead of strictly suspending Brad and Mike or letting them off without consequences, he could impose a fair but proportionate punishment. For example, he might make them sit out the first half of the semifinal game or require extra practice sessions as a form of accountability. This way, Jeff maintains his authority and reinforces the importance of discipline while still giving the team a fair chance to compete. Such a decision would demonstrate both firmness and understanding, showing that while rules matter, fairness and the team’s collective spirit also hold great value.
