Formative assessment: Drafting and multi-stage assignments
Learners get set a short story writing assignment. They are asked to submit a draft by a specifed date. They are then are assigned to a group of 5-6 other learners and asked to read the stories submitted by everyone else in their group before the next class. When they come along to the next class they work in their small groups, providing feedback to each other about what worked in each story. They can also ask the author for clarification if they didn't understand some aspect of the characterisation, setting, plot etc. As the tutor I also give students detailed non-graded feedback. They then have the opportunity to revise and re-write the story. At the end of the semester they choose their best three to five stories and submit them as a folio for their final summative assessment.
- Kerry Sunderland

Usually start with a revision quiz covering the previous session. Any points still unclear are discussed, before moving on to the next topic. Generally, this will be a lecture, followed by a hands-on lab where students get to apply the theory/theories learnt and experience what it means. Labs usually include questions, wich will then be discussed - another opportunity to clarify any points that may be unclear.
