In 1863 slavery became illegal, which rocked the world of Suriname. As many as 200,000 slaves were owned in Suriname and used as labor workers. When slaves were freed, it caused a devastating labor shortage. People didn't know what to do, so the government recruited workers from other countries. However, the bad work conditions chased most of them away. 
2. Around 1982, Suriname was experiencing unrest. The military was trying to take over the government, but because of the crumbling state of the country, most people didn't care. So, they took power without much protest in 1982 and executes fifteen supports of the democratic opposition movement. 
3. 1991 marks the year that Suriname started holding regular elections for government positions. Most people thought this would improve the state of the country, but it did not. Ronald Venetiaan was president for almost twenty years before being defeated by Bouterse.
