It gets a bit frustrating reading about how she's perfect and can't break any rule but when her granddad comes to meet her, there is a turning point. Her granddad doesn't have as large of an influence yet, but the words he states and the proof he gives will probably get Celestine thinking. While this seems somewhat unrealistic, it keeps me more interested and makes me want to read further into the story because all the action is interesting. We see her start of as the perfect girl of society and later change into a defiant rebel of the guild. My blood is on his robe. He did this to me. Him. I feel nothing but disgust for him. I used to think that I couldn't be afraid of someone so human. Now I realize it is his humanity that scares me the most, because despite having all those traits, having shared the moments we've shared, he could still do this to me. Now I find him terrifying. I see the evil in him" (page 122). This quote is very impactful because it displays the change and realization of Judge Crevan's personality to everyone. The fact that Crevan's robe is the same color as the scars on Celestine is significant because it conveys how he is the main antagonist. Celestine realizes that the person who she thought was humane turned out to be evil. When Celestine tries to sit next to Colleen Tinder during lunch, Colleen says, "Are you really this desperate? Where were you two weeks ago? Why didn't you ask me then? Of course you were too selfish to even say hi to me then" (page 154). This shows how when Celestine used to be "perfect" and not Flawed, she didn't treat Colleen as she would've treated her before her mom had been ruled as Flawed. They care extremely about how others see them, what people think, and how people's opinions will effect them. Celestine had been viewed as perfect. Perfect daughter, perfect friend, perfect member of society. But after one mistake, her image was completely turned around. Art and Ewan acted like they didn't even know her anymore. She was still the same person but because their society conditioned them to think a certain way, the people closest to her were now somewhat against her. Normal people become social pariahs by doing one act, that they may see as morally right, that goes against what their society has become. So she never had to mentally put herself in a place so she could keep herself strong and motivated. Even when Celestine was flawed she only cried and worried about what was going to happen, but since Bosco had her back (at least when she thought he did) she didn't have to keep herself strong because she had support. But then once everything went downhill for her and she was getting branded was when we could see her true strength. She did whatever she could to not scream or show weakness in her while getting branded because she didn't want the guild or Bosco to think that they got what they wanted from her. In the beginning of the book, Pia was someone who always followed the rules and was like Crevan's puppet. However, now she's on Celestine's side and is trying to help her defeat Crevan. Pia told Celestine that she has fans, such as a "new journalist," named Lisa Life. It turned out that Pia was Lisa Life and she admired Celestine because she was a brave hero. This is a drastic change from the beginning of the book because Pia hated her back then.
