This webpage breaks down the importance of understanding students and how they interact with their environment and why this is important to be aware of, but especially for students with disabilities. This webpage suggests that students behaviors are directly effected by the space they are in, therefore an ecological assessment is essential for successfully including students from special education into other settings. There are six steps to consider when completing an ecological assessment; 1) delineation of the assessment, 2) formation of the conceptual framework within which to assess the learner and the environment, 3) implementation of the assessment plan, 4) evaluation of assessment results, 5) development of a set of hypotheses and 6) development of a learning plan. This could be a great resource for a teacher struggling to understand why inclusion is or is not working for the student.
