The Young Scot website has lots of information for young people about relationship advice, lifestyle, work, study, and health among other topics that might be useful. There are some discounts, deals and other rewards up for grabs. It has good links to other websites, and lists many activities and events to get involved in. Young scot host events and votes for young people to actively participate in local decisions. They also have facebook, twitter, instagram and snapchat accounts - for some, these platforms might make the information more easily accessible.

Interactive map of services

This interactive map gives an overview of some of the local services in Edinburgh, providing links to the websites of the organisations listed. It is easy to use, and different filters can be applied to narrow down a search by the type of venue or the activities provided. However it should be noted that these details can change. The list is also not exhaustive of all the opportunities that exist for young people in Edinburgh - it is a good place to start, but is not up to date, and there are many more organisations than those listed. For example several Edinburgh Leisure venues offer youth services such as ‘Open all hours’ https://www.edinburghleisure.co.uk/open-all-hours . Museums, libraries, galleries, theatres, charities, and many other venues may have programmes, activities and spaces that could provide for the needs of the children in your care.

Why Educators should Consider this topic.

The transition between p7 and S1 can be a difficult time for many children. While schools often run transition programmes, the focus can often be on procedural and organisational changes and less about social or emotional issues (Jindal-Snape & Miller, 2008). However, youth centres can provide respite, support and many other benefits for children and young people which can ease that transition, supporting their learning and wellbeing. It can complement the Curriculum for Excellence and our ability to encourage the four capacities helping children to become confident individuals, effective contributors, successful learners and responsible citizens (Youthlink Scotland, 2012) The Scottish government policy - ‘Getting it right for every child’ (GIRFEC) compels us to support children in receiving the right help when they need it. (Scot Gov, 2006) Youth workers are often trained and experienced in noticing and dealing with difficult circumstances. Supporting children through youth services can have a positive impact on learning, behaviour, relationships and wellbeing at school as well which can ease pressures on teachers.

Action Educators can take

Hopefully this information pack has been a useful overview of some of the important work that youth services provide, which can be particularly beneficial during the transition between p7 and S1.

As educators we can increase our knowledge of local services and opportunities and be able to talk about them and recommend them to students.

It is good to make contact and collaborate with youth centres, and share knowledge and information. Youth workers will have information and advice in return on how best to support children too.

National Youthwork strategy:

“Strengthening partnerships between school staff and youth work practitioners remains a priority for [the] Curriculum for Excellence programme…”

Collaboration between professional groups to support children and their families is seen as advantageous in the Scottish Government’s Educational governance 2017.

There is a recognition that time constraints can make these collaborations difficult but networks of collaboration are beneficial for supporting children with additional support needs, and for closing the attainment gap. (Marcus, 2016)

Involving community services and families when appropriate can be a great benefit to a young person’s learning and development. Community services play a vital role for many children, but face severe budget pressures. It is important that we as educators support youth work however we can.

Many approaches taken by youth services to encourage confidence, autonomy, create a nurturing environment, and to develop positive relationships can be employed within a school setting too and can promote successful transitions (Field & Hoffman, 2012) - In conclusion, we can learn a lot from other partners in education and childcare and work together to help deliver the best for Scotland’s children.

What better way to understand the benefits of youth work than to see it in action and hear from the children and young people themselves? This video provides a snapshot into a music club at a youth centre in the heart of Edinburgh. You can see the range of support and resources available, in addition to the care and compassion of the youth workers, the safe and inclusive space, and the opportunities to make friends and earn new skills - this video goes some way to demonstrate how important this can be.
