Wasps belong to the insect family.  They  are invertebrates which means they have no backbone, instead they have an exoskeleton which is a skeleton on the outside of their bodies.  They have three main body parts; the head, the thorax and abdomen.  They also have six legs and a pair of wings.  Wasps live everywhere except Antarctica.                                                
The Queen
The queen wasp is the only wasp in the whole nest to lay eggs.  The queen lives for 2-5 years and she is the only wasp to survive winter.  There is only one queen per nest.                                    

The stinger
Female wasps have stingers.  There are some species that both male and female can’t sting. Unlike bees, wasps can repeatedly sting, some people are allergic to a wasp sting.

Behaviour
Wasps eat sweet plants like fruit, flower nectar and honey.  They get their protein from meat not pollen.  When threatened, a wasp will emit pheromone,  a chemical that alerts other wasps to come and help them.       

Appearance
Wasps can be many different colours from black, brown and yellow to metallic blue or light red.  There are over 75,000 species of wasp with many different subspecies.  

Wasps make their nests on trees,  walls or in the ground where it is damp and dark.
