In my experience, I believe OERs will address two challenges:

Cost-related reluctance to purchase required course textbooks. Many students, especially internationals, do not purchase required course textbooks, primarily because of financial constraints. The adoption of OERs would eliminate this challenge.
The depth and scope of most mainstream human biology textbooks are not a good fit for Fleming courses. The fallout from this is that when mainstream textbooks are purchased, relatively little of it is relevant. A greater part of such books is not used in the course. There are rigid rules around customizing mainstream textbooks.

With the economy being as poor as it is right now, taking away the financial aspect I'm sure is a huge help to students. For teachers and students being able to change up the teaching styles for students specific needs and the teachers methods can be for helpful for the whole class.
