Food production can be affected by physical, economic, political and technology. Such as climate, green revolution as well as consumer demand. By comparing the scale of these factor: Green revolution refers to the rapid increase in the productivity of agricultural through the use of science and technology. It is most important because of its sucesss in LDCs, proving that green revolution generally benefits the people in lower economic groups, while it has lesser effects on developed countries. Consumer demand refers to the people’s willingness and ability to obtain a particular food or product. It affects the amount and type of crops produced. However, the preferences of people varies between different countries and culture, hence different people have different food preferences. Thus the demand for the types of food in various countries and different, and does not affect the overall fluctuations in food production. Climate is the average condition of the atmosphere of a specific place over a Long period of time, it is an uncontrollable factor and sometimes unpredictable. When there are unfavourable climate conditions in a region, the food production may suffer. Hence, consumers may not have access to their food preferences. Thus I disagree with the statement and climate is the main driving force behind changes in food production.

i believe that consumer demand is the main driving force behind changes in food production. due the the growth of population and economy, there is a growing demand for food. when there’s a higher demand there will be a need in higher supply, so farmers will try to invent new ways to grow crops more efficiently. without a growing demand, there’s no need for farmers to grow crops with a high yield as even if there’s high yield there will not be anyone buying the crops. it is predicted that by 2050 the population will grow from 7.7 billions to 10 billions and global food production must increase by 70% to meet the needs of increase population. thus the growing demand from the consumer will push farmers to make use of the technology and physical factors to produce a higher yield so that they can earn more money.
-brandon & andrea

Food production is mainly based on the consumers' preferences as their opinions tend to matter most. As compared to climate conditions, whereby certain types of food may not be able to be grown in certain temperatures or the amount of rainfall, and the agribusiness involved. The types of food consumed by the consumers is ultimately decided by the consumers themselves as they have the choice of what to consume. Hence I agree that 'Consumer demand is the main driving force behind changes in food production'.

Consumer demand refers to people's willingness and ability to obtain a particular food crop or product. Food production changes according to the taste and preferences of the consumers, and affects the amount and type of crops produced. I disagree that consumer demand is the main driving force behind changes in food production, because political factors overpowers the economic factor. The government policy is a plan of action by the government in order to change a specific situation. For example, the food policy refers to the decision made by the government to how food is produced, processed, distributed, purchased and packaged. Another political factor that affects food production is the ASEAN Plus Three Emergency Rice Reserve (APTERR) agreement. It is a commitment from big rice producers to supply rice for a reserve. During times of disasters, this reserve would be used to provide rice to countries that have signed the agreement and are affected. For example, during 2012, Thailand started a programme for the other ASEAN nations to intensify rice production in the region. Thus, consumer demand is not the main driving force behind changes in food production.

Consumer demand does drive changes in food production. Such as Florida's orange production due to high demand of orange juice in America or the large amounts rice grown in Asia due to the large consumption of rice in Asian culture. This demand of crops are significant in driving the type of crops grown in a country or around the world, however, due to climatic conditions such as the drought in Florida, where crop growth is affected because of the scarcity of water. As the climate is unpredictable and crop growth is dependent on weather and climate conditions, regardless of demand farmers have to grow crops in accordance to climate before anything else.

Consumer demand refers to consumers’ willingness and capability to purchase and consumer particular food products. Due to the changing tastes and preferences of consumers, the type of crops and amount of crops produced will change accordingly. So for example meat products in China. As China grew more affluent, consumers in China had the capability to consume more meat and thus demand increased, driving the import of more feed for livestock. Hence driving up meat production and food production.

We completely agree to this statement.
Demand refers to people’s willingness and ability to obtain a particular food crop or product. The demand for certain types of food affects the intensity of their production. The demand for food changes according to the tastes and preferences of consumers, and affect the amount and type of crops produced. The amount of capital a consumer has, in the form of money or other assets, affects whether a demand can be met. China used to be a producer and exporter of corn. In recent years, more corn has been needed to feed livestock as the demand for meat by a larrger and wealthier population increased. As the local production of corn was not able to meet the increasing demand for food for livestock, China started to import corn from other countries such as USA. As China’s population grew in wealth, this allowed for the demand for more meat to be met. Hence, the USA increased its production of corn for export to China to feed livestock. In turn, more livestock can be reared for meat.
Another factor is climate, it refers to the average condition of atmospher over a specific place or specific time, usually over 30 years. Climatic factors include temperature and rainfall. Temperature affects the rate of photosynthesis and seed germination. For example, temperatures below 5 degrees decreases most of plants growth. Temperature varies amongst different crops. For example, pea, broccoli and strawberries. Soya beans and tomatoes requires warmer climates. For example, soya beans requires about 25 to 28 degree celcius for optimal growth.

I agree to the statement. Firstly, in comparison with time among purpose of farming, consumer demand and agribusiness, consumer demand is main driving force. In the long run, the need for food increases as our population is increasing. Also, with the increase of disposable income, the food preference can change. Whereas compared to agribusiness, the process of agribusiness chain will not have any major changes. Moreover, larger companies are not easily affected by the changes of the environment. And also, for the purpose of farming, the time needed to harvest the crops will not have a drastic change. Therefore, consumer demand is the main driving force behind changes in food production.

I do not agree with the statement completely. When weighing the economic factor of consumer demand, physical factor of climate change and political factor of government policy based on their degree of influence, climate change comes out on top. This is because climate change directly affects the ability of food to be produced, whereas
consumer demand comes second as it indirectly affect food production. Lastly, government policy only facilitates the food supply chain. Even with a high demand of food and policies to increase food production, if the suitable climate for the production of food is not met, the food production will not increase. However, All the factors are still essential in playing their own parts to affect food production. Hence I do not agree with the statement completely

I agree to a large extent as in terms of the scale, there are about 7 billion ppl in the world, hence this large amount of ppl's preference wld affect food production greatly. Due to influence, consumer demand can affect the changes in food population as the high demand will create high demand of food to be produced. Consumer have more power as they cause more food production.

I agree to the statement to a large extend,as the word demand refers to people's willingness and ability to obtain aparticular food crop or product. When consumer's taste and preference change, the demand for food changes accordingly, thus affacting the amount and types of crops produce.Hence the demand for that particular type of food will affact the intensity of their production. In Addition, the amount of capital of the people, in the form of money, can affect if the demand can be met. When people became more wealthy , they tend to demand more meat in for their daily consumsionFor example, China used to be self-sufficient in corn production and was one of the corn-exporting counteries. However, the demand for meat in the country increase due to economic growth. Thus, causing the corn production in the country to be insufficient to feed livestock. As a result, china has to import corn form other countries such as US to increase its meat production. Hence, the consumers will affact the change in food production.
-SongJian

Consumer demand refers to consumers’ willingness and capability to purchase and consumer particular food products. Due to the changing tastes and preferences of consumers, the type of crops and amount of crops produced will change accordingly. So for example meat products in China. As China grew more affluent, consumers in China had the capability to consume more meat and thus demand increased, driving the import of more feed for livestock. Hence driving up meat production and food production.
Another factor that influences changes in food production is governmental policies such as food policies. These food policies can range from stockpiling to diversifying the source of food supply. This means that the country sets aside and stores more food to ensure food security and as a result, it can cause farmers to produce more of the food to meet the demand of the government. On top of that, the diversifying of food sources means that the government of a certain country will import food from other countries rather than a few specific producers. As a result, the supplying countries will have to increase food production to manage another importer or have to decrease food production in order to avoid an excess of food.
Despite this, the consumer demand remains first and foremost the driving factor of food production as it has the largest scale. In Africa, the increasing demand is for staples, in China the increasing demand is for meat and in western countries the increasing demand is for organic food while governmental policies on food have remained relatively unchanged. Thus consumer demand is the main driving factor for changes in food production.

'Consumer demand is the main driving force behind changes in food production.' To what extent do you agree with this statement?

The changes in food production is when a certain factor that will cause an increase or decrease in the production of some food. As the world demand for food in general will keep on increasing, the demand for the various amount of food products will continuous vary. Hence, I agree that consumer demand is the main driving force of the food production…

Consumer demand might be due to the changes in income and food prices. Also with due consideration to health choices, the demand for different types of food will also change too. For instance, when there is an increase in one’s income, there would be a decrease in the consumption of staple food while a increase in the consumption of meat can be obviously seen. For example, China used to be self-sufficient in corn but as disposable income increases and changing food preference, corn and more meat has to be imported from other countries such as the USA even with production already increasing. Hence, the consumer’s demand is a large factor resulting in the changes in food production.

Technology is also a factor that cause the changes in food production. It is where improvements is made in farming technology. High-yielding variety (HYV) is an example of a particular crop that have been developed through cross-breeding of selected varieties that exhibit favourable characteristics. For example, the Wonder Rice which has a growing season of 100 days as compared to the 120 days for non-HYVs. There hybrids have very significant benefits as they mature quickly and are mostly tolerant to disease, droughts and floods. Therefore, technology also causes the changes in food production.

Lastly, another cause to changes in food production climate change. Climate change is whereby the condition of the atmosphere of a specific place over a long period of time. The climate of an area would determine the type of crops that can be grown and the productivity of the land. For example, the food production in Canada can only occur less than half a year, due to its long winter season hence also a lower crop yield. Greenhouses might be built to facilitate a environment for various types of crops to be grown as temperature, light and irrigation can be controlled. This is why it’s a reason food production is constantly on the change.

There are various factors that cause a change in food production. As time passes, the food preference of the people all over the world will keep varying and the climate will also be changing. Hence, technology is constantly improving the production of food products so as to ensure a ready amount of supply for us human beings. However, it all comes down to the human as they are the one who are producing and consuming. They are the one developing the tech for a better yield and in the end, they are the ones causing the climate change hence it is safe to say they are the main driving force in the changes of food production.

If there is no demand for food, the agribusiness and farming also could not sustain in the long run. As such, this is the most important factor
- Hong Tuck 4I

I agree to this statement to a large extent.

Consumer demand has the greatest influence on the changes in food production. Without demand, food prices would decrease, food production lines may choose to produce other food products that bring in more profit. Thus food on high demand would have a higher rate of production.

I agree to a large extent that consumer demand is the main driving force behind changes in food production. This is because when the higher the demand, the higher the supplies needed. Especially when the world's population is growing rapidly every year and more people being able to afford more food and meat, the amount of food needed will go up steadily. Therefore changes in food production such as automation and industrialisation are implemented to meet the increase demand and to make more money.
