Behavioral Health

Children develop either healthy or unhealthy behaviors at an early age. Parents play such a vital role in this because, children spend the most time with their parents and observing them as well. The behaviors you act out in front of your child is what they will carry with them. It is important that you try to promote positive behaviors by not only being the role model and displaying them but also by speaking with your child about choices. We want to make sure that the children understand that they have choices and that it is up to them to pick the right one or the positive one.

Emotional Development

During their school day activities, during play or group activities they will build on their emotional development. But it should not end here at school. We need for parents to work on this at home too. Disciplining children play a big role in their emotional development. It is never appropriate to verbally threaten or talk down to your children. Positive reinforcement is usually what has shown to be effective, or distracting the child from what they were doing. Children are just little humans and also can become stressed or overwhelmed of that is what they see from their parents. We need to be aware of what all we are saying in front of them and also need to give them time alone. If we see them off to a quiet space every once in a while that is okay. It is healthy for them to unwind and have some alone time.

Social Development

Social development goes hand in hand with emotional development. It also is built during play time and participation of group activities. School age children during play or recess will be able to build their social skills by the interaction with their classmates. During these times they sometimes play pretend or they get upset. But either way they will learn many skills, like learning to work as a team or learning to control their emotions when they are upset. Social development is also built at home, family time is so essential at this time in their lives. They need to build a trusting bond with you and need to feel that you are there for them no matter what. Social skills are all about communication, and recess or working in groups is definitely going to help with the children understanding this and them building healthy relationships in the future.

Common characteristics of a school age child in kindergarten are that they are curious, are learning how to deal with many different emotions, they are starting to build relationships more, they can be very active and may not have a much of an attention span yet, and they want to act just like their role model or who they look up to.

Specific ways I will support this classroom and how I am promoting parent support at home

I will support these children by letting them be themselves while in my class. I will build strong trusting relationships with them, this way they can feel it okay to come to be about any and everything. I will teach them and show them not only that academics are important but also that building positive relationships is big. I will build and maintain open communication and trust with the parents this is crucial to the success of the child. I will send home plenty of information, resources, and activities home with the children so that they can spend time with their parent/s. I will create my own website that is only used for my class. This will be easy access for the parents to know everything that is going on with the class weekly. On that website I would not only post what our academic goals for the week are, but also what we are doing to build on out social, emotional, and mental health. I will also post information on any homework or projects. I would also like to write a few blogs in relation to my class and maybe some healthy tips and fun activities and recipes for the children to try at home. I will do anything I can to make it fun and inviting for you all.
