There are certain things which came up which are not scientifically plausible. For example,  it is not possible that human beings could have affected the movement of the outer core through Project Destiny. It is thousands of miles below the earth surface. Also, the crystals and geode could not exist deep inside the mantle. There is too much heat and pressure. Rocks and crystals would melt. Also, Dr. Brazzelton could not have survived being exposed to the core temperature long enough to have pulled any switches or gizmos. 
The things which were scientifically plausible (I looked them up): 1) The outer core does kind of spin or rotate, 2) The outer core rotation does generate a magnetic field , 3) The layers of the Earth are properly named in the movie : crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core.




The second half of the movie was very interesting. People are starting to ask questions. After all,  Rome was partially destroyed by a lightning storm. The EM field is degrading faster than expected. In such a situation, as described, this could happen.  With no time left to lose,  the high command orders the launch to begin immediately.  The journey to the center of the earth is to begin.  In order to restart the core spinning, they  plan to set off nuclear bombs which will set off shockwaves which will regenerate the EM field. Hot metals spinning generates an electro-magnetic field. They decide to launch at the Mariana Trench. The crust is thinner there. There is weird weather at the launch area, even though it is supposed to be summer. The thin crust means intense earthquake activity. The crew barely survives the earthquake.  They encounter a giant crystal geode canyon. The geode is not scientific.  The lava starts destroying because of the hole they poked in it.  Magma gushes from above. Iverson is killed. Dr. Serge Leveque dies while trying to save the all important codes  for launch. The compartment is crushed by the intense pressure.  This is scientific, since the pressure would increase at deep levels.   Later on, they encounter a bunch of diamonds.  The ship is damaged. A subsection is ejected.   They reach the outer core. It is not as thick as they thought. The shock waves won't work, since it is too thin. (In reality, we don't really know the exact measurements at the core, since scientists have to guess) They have a plan B.  Brazzelton  turns off a safety switch in a very hot area and dies. The plan is to divide the nuclear weapons and put them into the compartments which would be individually jettisoned off  to create a ripple effect. Supposedly the explosions would all work together, and magnify the effect which would restart the core.  The core is restarted after Keyes jettisons the  nuclear which is in the final compartment.  Keyes and Childs escape by  using the heat and pressure from the blasts and energy waves to power up their vessel. They end up on the sea floor since they broke through the oceanic crust. They power up a sonar beacon, and  whales swim nearby. Finch figures out the Virgil is near the whales.
