I think too much support from the mentor will inhibit the growth of the mentee. Similarly, too many challenges to the mentee will make him/her question his/her self-worth. This means that the mentor should challenge the mentee enough to let the mentee grow, without the element of self-doubt.

The mentor should provide more support to the mentee if he finds the mentee lacking motivation, is frustrated or stressed.

On the contrary, the mentor should challenge the mentee if he finds the mentee making insufficient progress, falling back on deadlines or overly dependent on the mentor that compromises his/her independent decision-making.

Balancing challenge and support in mentoring is crucial. Warning signs like a lack of progress, stress, or disengagement indicate the need for adjustment. If a mentee is stressed, increase support; if progress stopped or stagnant, raise the challenge. Adapt feedback to avoid defensiveness. Address overdependence by fostering independence. Declining confidence requires added support and acknowledgment of strengths. Communication breakdowns need open discussions. Watch for signs of burnout and adjust workload. Encourage initiative to keep the mentoring relationship dynamic and effective.

Mentoring is a long term process where there can be a time when the mentee is under challenged thus feel demotivated and sometimes he/she may be over challenged resulting in frustration. Therefore a mentor must look for opportunities to challenge the mentee's capabilities by giving adequate support to boost his/ her confidence to achieve the given goal. Finding the right mix of challenge and support is important to foster growth for both mentor and mentee.

After observing the image, “Mentors support, they challenge and they provide vision”, I think a mentor plays a vital role in a mentee's personal and professional development. Firstly, the mentor builds confidence, offers guidance, and gives encouragement in difficulties. Secondly, mentors also provide challenges so that the mentee comes out of his comfort zone and moves towards development.

There is another thing that I understand that in mentoring a balance of support and challenge creates an ideal environment of growth. Support provides a way for learning while challenges extend capabilities in mentees. A balance between support and challenge keeps the mentee growing faster.

A mentor should adjust their support and challenge balance if the mentee is overwhelmed, unmotivated, or consistently struggling. Conversely, if the mentee seems disengaged, increasing the challenge could be necessary. Regular communication and feedback enable mentors to tailor their approach to the mentee's evolving needs and progress.

Observing a colleague's performance is crucial in mentoring. If excessive support is noted, it may hinder growth, while too many challenges may lead to self-doubt. If the mentee lacks motivation or appears stressed, increased support may be beneficial. Conversely, insufficient progress, missed deadlines, or overreliance on the mentor may indicate a need for increased challenges. Striking the right balance between challenge and support is essential for fostering growth in both mentor and mentee.

Maintaining a balance between challenge and support is essential while mentoring a mentee in order to effectively assist their growth and development. A distracted, uninterested, or unmotivated mentee may indicate that the challenge is too great or that they are not receiving enough assistance. Offer more guidance and encouragement.

A mentee who is unduly dependent on their mentor for guidance may not be facing enough difficult tasks or may not have the self-assurance to take on projects on their own. Gradually raising the bar on the difficulty level while offering little assistance can promote independence.

Sadaf Zehra

Mentoring is long term process but it is not forever Mentore guides and provides all the support needed when required. At times mentee seems bored or uninterested in their work, they might need more challenging tasks to keep them engaged to develop and grow. They often feels stressed or overwhelmed, it could mean that the challenges they face are too difficult for them. They might need more help or guidance from mentor. If they seems to have trouble making progress or reaching their goals, it could mean they need more support. Breaking tasks into smaller steps or giving them extra resources or training might help. If their confidence seems to be going down, it might mean that the balance between challenge and support isn't working for them. They might need more encouragement and feedback to feel better about their abilities.
