There are also 2 other possible scenarios. In the case where the supply curve shifts more than the demand curve, the new equilibrium will be a rise in price and a fall in quantity. In the situation of the constant shifting of the both curves, prices will remain the same and quantity will fall. Hence, with reference to the 3 possible cases, the effect on price is indeterminate while the effect on quantity is determinate as it will always fall.

However, the explained case mentioned earlier is the more realistic one and representative of a real life scenario due to the analysis made. The leftward shift of the demand and supply curve will reinforce each other to result in a sharp decrease in quantity. (Clarissa)

Demand falls, demand curve shifts leftward from D1 to D2. Supply falls, supply curve shifts leftward from S1 to S2.

At the original P, a fall in both demand and supply, leads to a surplus of coffee beans as Qs is more than Qd. This creates a downward pressure on price for coffee to clear the shortage.
As both the price and quantity demanded for coffee decrease, the surplus is gradually reduced until it reaches equilibrium at the intersection of the new DD curve, D2 and the new SS curve, S2.
This leads to the price decreasing, from P1 to P2, as well as the quantity, from Q1 to Q2. (Izzah)

SUPPLY - "Guatemala, Nicaragua and El Salvador, have been hit by leaf rust, a fungal disease, which could destroy 30% of the crop this year" suggests that the worldwide supply for coffee will decline due to a disease. As a result, the supply curve will shift to the left. (Hani)

DEMAND - "recession in Europe has hit demand" suggests that there is a fall in incomes of the coffee consumers in Europe, ceteris paribus, which reduced the consumers purchasing power. Hence, demand for coffee fell, assuming coffee is a normal good. The demand curve will then shift to the left. (Hani)

DEMAND- "consumption in the developed world-American, European and Japanese drinkers consume more than half the world's coffee-is flat" suggests the demand for coffee in countries that consumes majority of the world's coffee production has declined greatly, assuming coffee is a normal good. Thus, the demand curve will shift leftward. (Hani)
