According to Greek Mythology, "Sckylla is an immortal and irresistible monster that beset the narrow waters Odysseus crossed." She was a supernatural female creature who had 12 feet and 6 heads on long snake-like necks. Each of her heads had a triple row of shark-like teeth and her loins were girdled by the heads of baying dogs. Scylla's history of her transformation was that she was originally human in appearance but transformed out of jealousy through the witchcraft of Circe into her female shape.

Function in the Odyssey

Scylla's purpose in the Odyssey was to devour anything that came near her. She is one of the reasons why ships are perished throughout the waters and why men die, since they are eaten by Scylla. She serves as a monster that is feared by many others in the Odyssey, and people say that, "For Scylla is not mortal; moreover she is savage, extreme, rude, cruel and invincible."

There are many monsters in the Odyssey that are introduced, which all are scary. However, Scylla places a heavy amount of fear of sail man by killing them and even wreaking their important items.
