Drifting, dreaming, our boat glides through the lagoon

Port side: The island of Pellestrina, 11 kilometres long, 500 metres at its widest

Pink, yellow, brown, pale orange, orange-pink, lime green with dark green shutters, sandy brown, deep red, brown, cornflower yellow, salmony pink, vermillion, pink, 

mustard yellow with pink shutters

The sun intensifies the coloured facades

The lagoon is calm, except for the wake created by our small motorboat

The dog on board sniffs the sea air, his ears blow in the wind

Many of our crew have left now, back to foreign lands, sadly missing this new discovery

I think about them and these last three weeks

We continue the glide along the coastline

The chocolate box houses momentarily replaced by industrial structures

Huge white cylinders, large rectangular buildings

A resting cement transporter: yellow with blue stripes and rust

Boat yards, warehouses, white, blue, terracotta red, sandy brown with broken windows 

Four large blue barrels lined up outside

Two yellow cranes stand in the distance out to sea

Starboard: Silhouettes of fishing huts precariously sitting on stilts

Patched together bits of timber and corrugated roofs

Muted colours, contrasting with the array of coloured houses on the shoreline

Calm, quiet

Like an abandoned shantytown of the sea

Each structure is individual, beautiful

Nets hanging, fish boxes, memories 

I wonder about the fishermen

I wonder what it might be like to sit for hours out here
