Which one of the PBS implicit Bias videos had the most impact on your perception of bias and why?

High Heels, Violins, and a Warning. Our brains have been conditioned from an early age to filter the perception of the environment and the people in it based on our culture, our family, and our friends. Our preconceptions blind us. For instance, when someone says the word Dr, I immediately think of a male because traditionally, it was a male profession even though I have seen many female doctors. As a human, I have many biases that I am unaware of, but I can become better at spotting them with practice.

Why is it essential for healthcare providers to understand the impact of trauma on individuals?

Trauma affects finances, relationships, pathologies, resilience, and health outcomes. No matter how many pills a person takes, they cannot move towards a healthier life if their souls are unbalanced. As health care professionals, we need to learn how to support the person to provide the right tools or prevent traumatization by forcing them to relive the trauma.

What is the most alarming fact you learned about the wealth inequality in America?

Since I arrived in the U.S., I have wondered why neighborhoods are segregated here. Learning about de jure segregation that resulted from displacement, the U.S. Housing Authority, and the Federal Housing Administration practices, housing loan discrimination, redlining, blockbusting, and slum creation, oppress the African American community. The result was that these community members were never given the opportunity to grow wealth, go to college, and pass on the wealth to younger generations. The ripple effect is that minorities are highly unlikely to make it out of poverty generations later.

Reflect on the 3 myths of racism as discussed by Dr. Candis Watts-Smith. Which one (or more) had the most impact on your thinking and learning?

The myth that racism will go away when older people are gone. Racism continues to exist because a part of it is unconscious. Racism is not exclusive white toward the minority. There is racism between members of the same race/culture, and there is racism from minorities toward whites. Clumping everyone into a category based on their skin color and belittling them is racist, no matter the color. I want to learn about one another and not hate each other based on our history. History should not be erased. It should reminds us of our mistakes to never repeat them.

What are the challenges experienced in the Mattapan community and what are strategies used to address these challenges?

Most of the community lives below the poverty level; as a result, individuals face housing instability, undiagnosed depression, extensive gang activity, crime, violence, and a high rate of substance abuse. Poverty is associated with poor health outcomes because continuous exposure to stressors increases the risk of developing pathologies. Violence is another factor that affects health. It causes injuries, disability, death, and financial and psychological burden. Strategies that address these challenges are improving the social determinants of health in these communities, including education, employment, access to essential services, quality health care, affordable housing, and developing the infrastructure of these areas to promote physical activity, safety, and social integration.

Did you know about Indian Boarding School history? What were some of the thoughts that emerged for you as you were listening to these videos?

I learned about the infamous story behind the Native Boarding Schools in 2002 when I watched a film called Rabbit-Proof Fence. It tells the story of three Native girls who were forcibly separated from their families and sent to a Native settlement in the 1930s to be “educated.” Natives were considered “savages.” The horrors endured by the children were heartbreaking. Children victims of poverty suffer in all cultures. In the 1940s, in Britain, thousands of children from poor areas or orphans were sent to Australia and other countries with the promise of a better life. They were enslaved and abused by Catholic institutions, just like in settlements. These specific institutions no longer follow these practices, but many children worldwide continue to suffer the same fate.

Discuss your thoughts on 1 or 2 tips presented in the video on Trans Equity.

I will consciously apply tip #1, using my pronouns when I introduce myself. Letting others know my pronouns it’s a welcoming statement because it transmits acceptance. This token of respect is very powerful during first impressions. It may help lower some of the stress someone may feel accepted by a new person.

Another strategy I have already put in place is tip #3, briefly apologize and move on. Acknowledging my mistake shows that I respect their feelings and care about our interaction. The LGTBQ community members have fought so hard to be heard and recognized. We must continue to educate ourselves to create a safe environment where they can be themselves.

What is the link between access to education and health outcomes?

We get higher-paid jobs and better health insurance when we have more education. We also gain skills to access technology, understand complex concepts, have a higher reading level, understand our rights and obligations betters, and have more financial stability. We go on vacations, have downtime, days off, access to better food, live in safer neighborhoods, own a home, have access to transportation, and experience less stress compared to folks in low-income because we do not have to struggle to get by every day. Better environments and living conditions lower our risk of developing diseases and improve our chances of recovering from one because we have better access to treatment. We immediately seek care when we get sick because we do not worry about covering the bill.
