One could certainly argue that Kevin's fathers music taste may have played a large influential role in Kevin's musical interests and direction as a musician, considering that these were the persistent bands that Kevin heard as he was growing up (Fitzgerald, n.d.). As mentioned in Fitzgerald's web article, Jerry had also played in a band, regularly practising in a soundproofed garage (n.d.). 
Fitzgerald then states in his descriptive article 'It was here that Kevin began recording music at age 12. Happening upon a pair of his father’s two-track tape recorders, he became obsessed. He didn’t yet have the technical words to describe it, but he began multitracking layers of instrumental sound, creating his own backing tracks and experimenting with other rudiments of sound production. When Kevin’s drumming had to stop on account of Rosalind moving to a new house, Jerry taught him guitar. Just a few chords so he could play along with the old man on rhythm. After discovering guitar tablatures on the internet, Kevin moved away from his father’s tuition. He began teaching himself, constructing and deconstructing the parts of his favourite songs. He also came into the possession of a Casio keyboard' (n.d.). 

Angus Stone, the brother of the duo, was interviewed about his inspiration for his second album 'Broken Brights' which reached number two in the ARIA chart of 2012. In the MUSIC NSW interview Angus responded "More so than the influence of people that write music, it was the people I’ve met along the way who were the real muses for this record. It’s also movies that I draw inspiration from. When I watch a movie I can't help but slip into the character's shoes on screen and be totally there with them and relate and feel the music that in my mind goes with their journey" (2012). 

While this review is not based on one particular musician or band, one could argue that it still must be highlighted on, in an academic point of view; as it is a consistent response when asked about the indie, folk duo's musical inspirations. 
From a researcher's standpoint, you could say that it is not particularly easy to write about this. However, it is interesting to put it into context, for this reason. One could argue that a) the duo wanted it this way (for academics to struggle to compare them to other artists in the industry before them), or b) they are truly gifted individuals that draw their own authentic, creative inspiration from their own life experiences. Music created from the heart and soul, influenced by the people they have come across along their journeys. You could also argue that people themselves are their own art forms, and while we cannot put a name to each person that the two have written about over the years- we could still use this as a valid response for their 'influences' as it is a consistent response from the two and worth touching on.

Wilkening (2016) states 'the former sock-wearing funk-rockers have gone through eight guitarists, four drummers and 11 lineup changes as they grew into one of the world's most popular rock bands and expanded their sound to include more melodic pop, rock and soul influences'. A now widely known successful funk, rock band, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers were influenced by music artists such as Bad Brains, The Minutemen, Black Flag, Parliament, The Cure, Jimmi Hendrix, James Brown and more (Gonzalez, 2022). After researching these bands, they are within the scope of funkadelic, rock, punk, reggae, alternative, indie, jazz and soul. A lot of these elements are found in the Red Hot Chilli Peppers music, which is to suggest that their style of music was influenced by many genres, creating their distinctive sound.
