First, the President is letting people starve, especially the ones who need it most. Panem is a poor country, made out of Districts. Each District has some thing they’re good at to help the country. But they are still poor, anyway. It is like a pyramid-shaped social system because there are poor people and richer people, and the poorer people do not have the same rights. In this case, less food, though no one has the best food supply. As a result, everyone does not get enough food.
 Reason number 2 that proves Panem an oppressive country is the Hunger Games. The Hunger Games are a result that the Districts don’t have enough food to sustain the whole country. So, each of the Districts have two people fight to the death in an unfair game. The winning team gets food and oil. The others are, obviously, dead and their Districts get nothing. What is also known is that the Capitol gave them something called The Treaty of Treason. In the text, the author writes, "The Treaty of Treason gave us the new laws to guarantee peace and, as our yearly reminder that the Dark Days must never be repeated, it gave us The Hunger Games" (Collins, p.18). As a result, families are ripped apart by the death of these poor innocent children. The Hunger Games, an event that occurs once every year, that will destroy people's homes and families forever. The Hunger Games are where a boy and a girl from each District get chosen to compete with all the other 23 kids. These individuals participating in this event are the between the ages of 12 and 18. This tells me that this place is like our world, for their used to be explosions and accidents frequently. This happened in our real world.
     Panem is also an "Opressive Country" because it has unfair rules. If you have no money, there is no way to get food unless you break a law and hunt in the woods. The fence is also protection, but that protection can be deadly to the poor. This is an unfair law, for some are born without money. The text states,"succesful at keeping the flesh eaters out of district twelve",(Collins, p.5). This is like me, for I have to earn my money by doing chores. Though some people decide not to get a job.
     The last reason why Panem is an "Opressive Country" is because of the Hunger Games age rules. One age should not get more votes and responsibility than another. For example, a twelve year-old only has to enter their name once, and if they have an older sibling, don't get tessere. Tessere is the food you recieve for having an extra ticket with ypour name. The text states,"Oldest in the front, young ones, like Prim, towards the back",(Collins, p.16). Oppressive means to unjustly inflicting hardship and constraint, especially on a minority or other subordinate group. Therefore, Panem is oppressive because it is led by very strict rulers from a place know as the 'Capitol'. I can relate the people of Panem with myself and my other fellow American citizens because we currently have to live with Trump and his wall building to "help the economy".

          In the book, Katniss talks about how her father died in one of District 12's only jobs, coal mining. Coal mining is a dangerous job, having risks of mines collapsing or explosions. A mine accident happened when Katniss' dad was in the mine. When he didn't come out, Katniss had lost one of her only admirers. As the text states, "My father knew and taught me some things before he was blown to bits in a mine explosion", (Collins, p.5). Considering that District 12 is one of the most poor districts of the twelve, used-to-be thirteen, districts, the men have to work in the mines for food.

  The Capitol is very strict about how they play their 'games'. After the thirteen districts revolted and District 13 was obliterated, the Capitol started the Hunger Games. Every year, two tributes, a male and a female, from each district are sent to the Capitol to fight for the death against every tribute, including the opposite 
gendered tribute. One person against 23 other tributes. Only one can survive. While family members painstakingly watch their kids die, the Capitol enjoys it and has fun. One of the main reasons that Panem is such an oppressive country is because of Hunger Games is used because the government wants to show how all of the districts are at mercy for them, and are so close to being dead, and the government shows this by holding a cutthroat game to the death every year!? It's rude, and way to harsh. I can relate this to the world because women used to have terrible working conditions such as their payment. They are payed less than men because of the fact that they are women. This just goes to show that the "government" is being unfair, and oppressive.

 Another reason why Panem is being so harsh is because depending on what district you live in you are more poor or rich in either food or materials. This could be considered unfair because you don't have a choice on where you get to live you just have to suck it up. Another reason that this is unfair is because not everyone gets the same thing so you may end up in district 12, and not have that much whereas you may  be in a better district, and end up with a bunch of food, and better working conditions. In the text it talks about how everyday you could see people heading out to the mines to get coal, and other resources. Their shoulders are sagged and they are all dirty with dark hair and dirt on their faces. This is unfair because people could have a better life or a very sad, and hard.
