The first thing that you need to take care of iis the direction. A temple always need to be placed in the north-east or ishaan corner of your home. In Vedas, Ishan means Ishwar or god and is the direction of god. It is one of the first corners to receive sunlight in the morning. Therefore, it is advised to place your pooja temple here. Our planet is a little tilted towards northeast so its movement starts from that point, this is why the north east corner of your home is the first place to receive sunshine in morning. When you place your temple here, it will pull in all energies of your home this side and move it forward from there. So, make sure you inspect this part of your home well and see to it that the dimensions of your pooja mandir are  in sync with the design of this corner. 

 

With respect to decoration, know that the light or the diya needs to be placed on right of the person performing pooja. Your temple should always be decorated with fresh flowers and never smell dirty. Try to light up some dhoop, incense or aroma candles to cleanse up the region and form a divine ambience.  It is also advised not to keep photographs of your ancestors in the temple. Try to buy a temple that ha a small shelf in it or place it near a small shelf where you can place all your books and other related stuff. Lastly, one must avoid keeping temples in their bedroom or kitchen.
