In 1860's  they needed slaves and now we don't need slaves .  IN the 1860 the cotton had spikes on it so there was machine call the cotton gin and the cotton gin took the spikes out of the cotton .  The slave and plantation owners were happy about the cotton gin because the owners get more money and the slaves did not had to take  the spikes out of the cotton. The owners were getting happy with the money they was making and they wanted more slaves .The  plantation owners will get the cotton and send it  north to make money. Also, this is during the late antubellum period, so the cotton gin was recently invented by Eli Whitney, so slave numbers boomed! But, if slaves get eliminated from this country, the ecomomy of SC will collapse.
