Energy drinks should be banned for children under 16, the campaign and research group Action on Sugar says. I believe it is still implies to the kids under the age of 18. Energy drinks indeed should be banned for Malaysian under the age of 18 and below; considering that Malaysia are currently facing with the issue of obesity among kids.

Researchers from Action on Sugar are calling for strict limits on added sugars.

They argue that as the body can generate energy from food such as fruits, vegetables, pasta and rice, there is no need for additional sugar beyond this. For energy drinks contain a higher level of sugar intake, it is not an ideal drink for kids. Graham MacGregor, professor of cardiovascular medicine at Queen Mary University of London and chairman of Action on Sugar, said: "Children are being deceived into drinking large cans of this stuff, thinking they are going to improve their performance at school, during sports, or even on a night out.

Energy drinks have no therapeutic benefit, and many ingredients are understudied and not regulated. The known and unknown pharmacology of agents included in such drinks, combined with reports of toxicity, raises concern for potentially serious adverse effects in association with energy drink use.

</sub>

In my opinion, it seems that energy drinks are bad for the overall health of young people and should be prevented at all cost. However, banning only energy drinks will not solve the problem because there are drinks that contains higher caffeine and sugar in the market. According to Snowdown(2019), it is discrimination to only ban it alone because teenagers also mostly consumed caffeine and sugary drinks from other products rather than energy drinks. It is also possible the teenager will turn to other, potentially more dangerous beverages as a substitute, once energy drinks are illegal.

Snowdon, C. (2019).
