Promises ~ Hà compares herself to the Papaya tree, the trunk is her old life and she is clinging onto her old life like how the papayas are clinging onto the truck; “… clinging to the trunk. Still green but promising.” Just like how she could still go back to her life.

Perspective

Boat people

Boat people are refugees that leave Vietnam. They might feel very hopeless when they don’t have a lot of food. They also have many difficulties like straying safe from pirates, making sure no one had a cold, and surviving (food and water)?

US

The US helped get the Vietnam people in safety. They might also want to rescue more Vietnam people (like orphans). They might feel safe that they have done what they can do and now escorting Vietnam people out into different countries.

Ha

Ha might want to go to another safe country for her and her family together. Ha has learnt that they can’t go back and must keep going forward. Ha feels more safe now because they are in a safe area and she might feel sad for her brother. Ha wishes for her dad to come back, and for his brother to go to collage.

Mother

The mother might want the family to be more happy once they have moved and for the brothers to have more education. The mother might feel the family is depressed now and want them to be better. She wanted to go to France but he wants the beer for her sons so they went to America for more opportunities.

Brother Quang

Brother Quang might want to help more Vietnam people by translating and also want their family to be safe as the biggest kid in the family. Brother Quang is getting many opportunities for jobs which can help his family get back on their foot.
