Bad Dog by Mike Boldt

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It is a humorous picture book that highlights a little girl who is convinced her pet is a "bad dog". I feel like if I read this book to a group of students, they would be so engaged from the first page. The irony of the "pet dog" actually being a cat provides an interesting story from start to finish. I think this book would be perfect for a fun read aloud that wouldn't serve any purpose other than to entertain and provide laughs. I was captivated by the cover from the moment I saw this newly published book and would recommend reading this book aloud to all elementary grades.

Pig the Tourist by Aaron Blabey

I am a huge fan of this picture book series. When purchasing new books for the collection, I knew this title would be a student favorite and so far it has proven to be a popular choice. Pig the pug is a badly behaved character who is always up to dismay. This book has a moral/underlying message that would provide a great opportunity to teach students about good versus bad behaviors and the outcomes both can have. I would recommend this book to be read aloud to 1st through 3rd grades. This book and all the books in this picture book series are most definitely an entertaining read and would be perfect to read just for fun as well!

Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon by Patty Lovell

Teaching students to stay true to who they are is an important thing that can be incorporated into many lessons at all grade levels. Molly Lou Melon overcomes many obstacles and remains true to who she is and what she stands for. This picture book provides a great story to inspire students to be themselves and accept their own differences. Many students could possibly relate to the feelings conveyed in the story and I feel this picture book would be great as a read aloud for any elementary aged student. I enjoyed reading this text and feel that it would also pair well with a unit on bullying and acceptance. Out of all of the books I read during this picture book soak assignment, I feel this one best conveys a meaningful theme and story that can inspire students.

This book highlights a young girl who consistently questions and wonders about the scientific process behind everyday things. I enjoyed reading this book and feel that it would be perfect to spark curiosity in young students. This book would work great in a STEM unit and/or an introduction lesson promoting the use of the Scientific Method. I feel that it would best interest and serve upper elementary students as a read aloud. Lower elementary grades may benefit from the rhyming scheme presented throughout the book as well.

This picture book truly highlights the importance of creative writing. I thoroughly enjoyed the humorous tale of how the rock, paper, and scissors game came to be. The author did an amazing job appealing to kid's perception of how rock, paper, and scissors truly plays out. I would recommend this picture book to upper elementary students and think that from a first glance at the cover of the book, children would be hooked. Overall, this is a great read and I think it will encourage students to think outside the box and possibly create stories on many other popular "recess" games.

This book tells of a young imaginary friend who is never truly imagined. He simply just waits and waits for someone to imagine him. The emotion behind this book may be relatable to many students. Because of this, I feel this book would work very well as a read aloud in a unit on friendship and/or empathy. It sends a great message and also fosters the use of imagination. I also feel this book would work great with any elementary age student. It could be utilized in various ways to support the age range that is being targeted. It was truly a great read and reminded me of how it is important to foster the love of imagination.

Reading books with a moral and/or a lesson is something that classroom teachers look for regularly. When reading this book, I discovered it would be a great picture book to introduce to teachers and encourage them to incorporate into a read aloud lesson. This book highlights a bad seed who slowly decides he wants to be a better seed and overcome the hardships life has thrown at him. I feel this book would be great to read to any elementary aged student and accompany with lessons on overcoming obstacles and choosing to be nice and kind.

This was a unique story that highlights a young boy who wants to collect things as his older brothers do. What makes this story so different is that the young boy ends up collecting words and discovers the power words can have. This book would work great as a read aloud in any 2nd through 4th grade classroom and could be modified in many ways to create lessons involving sentence structure and word choice. I enjoyed reading how this young boy harnessed the power of words and would recommend this book to many teachers to support lessons within the classroom.

I Yam a Donkey by Cece Bell

When shelving recently checked out books, I knew this was a must read. I was intrigued by the cover and was even more surprised when I began reading the text. This book focuses on a yam and a donkey discussing how the use of correct grammar is important when introducing oneself. I was very shocked to read the last page because I did not think it was going to end that way based on the books focus on grammar. Overall, I was slightly confused as I read the text and I feel like if I read this to students they would be even more confused. I would suggest reading this book aloud to upper elementary students and feel it would be a resource that could possibly be used to supplement a grammar lesson.

When doing this picture book soak assignment, I was the most impressed by this book. I have seen it many times in circulation and picked it up without hesitation. The way the story is told is truly an inspiration and continues a well-loved story in the most thoughtful and articulate way. I would recommend this book to be used in a fairy tale unit and after discussing the original Humpty Dumpty tale. This book also would pair very well with a lesson on theme and/or author's message. Being that it focuses on theme and fairy tales, I feel that it would best work as a read aloud for 2nd-5th grade students; however, lower grades could use it as an enjoyable, just for fun read aloud as well.
