Summary: Alex Jones, a conspiracy theorist, was removed from Facebook, Twitter, and other social media sites, with the groups arguing that he broke their policies and user agreements. However, the argument can be made that he was targeted by these groups, due to his outlandish nature and large following, and that his First Amendment Right of Free Speech was being attacked.

Historical Context: These platforms’ standards had been around since 2012 and are constantly being used to remove abusers from Holocaust deniers to pornography (Source: The New Yorker). Many scholars have reported, as well, that “False speech does not serve the public interest the way that true speech does. And indeed, there is no constitutional value in false statements of fact.” (Source: New York Times).

Why is it controversial?: As stated in the summary, the balance of free speech on social media is an up-and-coming issue. It could be argued that more well-known members of these platforms are targeted more than others and therefore could be inequal  treatment of both the famous and the not-so-famous.
