The complexity of group collaboration needs to be considered when assessing student performance.

Students need to be made familiar with the competences of good collaboration in advance.

Challenges of Collaborative Learning

- Some might do more work than others.

- Students might argue.

- It's tough to see who did what in the group.

From what I've seen, children learn better when they collaborate. Group projects get them involved and learning from each other, which keeps them motivated. But managing groups can be difficult. It's hard to make sure everyone participates equally, and grading everyone's work in a group is tricky.

However, it's not so easy. I have to organise groups and teach how to work in groups, for example telling students that each one of them must try to contribute to the project, and, subsequently, that they have to listen to other pupils' contribution.

Once they learn how it works, this learning strategy shows its benefits:

It improves problem solving ability thanks to shared contributions;

It promotes diversity and inclusion: in fact, student with different backgrounds, sex and religion share their efforts and develop diversity awareness. In this heterogeneous teams, students learn from each other, learn respect towards others, in short they learn inclusion.

In addition, collaborative learning fosters critical thinking: in fact, my students usually engage in discussions and debates,

analyse ideas and make a decision.

Students with disabilities: again, if we want every student to participate effectively to the teamwork we must give each student a role and boost self-confidence.

Finally, competition among peers may emerge, and some pupils prefer working alone.

In terms of benefits, these are, in my opinion, the most relevant:

1.      It promotes students’ active engagement in the learning or task, fostering participation and collaboration;

2.      It develops interpersonal, social, and teamwork skills as well as communication skills;

3.      It boosts higher level thinking and problem-solving skills;

4.      It values diversity and fosters an inclusive environment for students;

5.      It enhances self-esteem and responsibility.

3.      It requires a variety of evaluation methods and tools for individual and group activities.

• Students are given the chance to learn with their peers, creating stronger bonds that will allow them to become more socially responsible;

• Gives them a sense of responsability and belonging;

• Allows them to share their ideas and thoughts;

• Makes them develop skills such as accountability.

• They need to follow group rules so everyone can understand their role and respect the other's own role;

• It might be difficult for students to join different paces as some can be quite fast in learning and collaborating and others might need more time;

• They need to deeply acknowledge the sense of being responsible towards the group.

It is a question of working, creating and producing together,participation, negotiation:working for everyone and not just for oneself, the need to hold on

It´s more holistical in the sense that develops other skills apart from the academic ones (problem solving, learning when to listen, when to speak, respect your peers, etc).

Another challenge of collaborative learning is the potential for conflict or disagreement among group members. It is essential for students to develop conflict resolution skills and learn how to work effectively with others in order to navigate these challenges.

Challenge 2: group dynamics need to be carefully designed to prevent the more academically gifted students from playing a role that overshadows the less gifted students, i.e. ensuring that everyone contributes similar amounts and that the quality of the output does not depend on the academic quality of the students in the team.

Another concern is the fact that some students may bring disagreements and most students nowadays don't know how to deal with their emotions and do not know how to prove their point without being rude to others.

Finally, assessment. Even if it's collaborative, I always try to include an individual part so that the assesment can be more...fair? But sometimes, it is a hard task.

Obviously the teacher should monitor, to check that everybody is collaborating in a fair way.
