Since collaborative work means that small teams within one class work on a specific task, the teacher assumes more the role of the coach who guides pupils but does not instruct them directly. There is a difficulty of assessing the performance of individual pupils. Roles within groups need to change to make sure that each pupil has diverse types of tasks to fulfill and to practice.

The complexity of group collaboration needs to be considered when assessing student performance.

Students need to be made familiar with the competences of good collaboration in advance.

By one hand, we have 30 students per classroom and the space is not organised for doing collaborative work. On the other hand, unfortunately, we have a lot of ICT constraints.

One of the biggest challenges is unequal participation, where some students dominate while others contribute less, that result in an imbalance in workload and learning. There are also students who don’t participate actively in group discussions or contribute their fair share of the workload. Assessing individual contributions in a group setting can be complex and may not accurately reflect each student’s understanding and effort. Potential conflicts and misunderstandings can hinder the learning process. Organizing and managing group activities can be time-consuming.

Benefits: I think collaborative learning is first of all a means to reach enhanced engagement for our students, because they are actively involved in a task.

However, it's not so easy. I have to organise groups and teach how to work in groups, for example telling students that each one of them must try to contribute to the project, and, subsequently, that they have to listen to other pupils' contribution.

Once they learn how it works, this learning strategy shows its benefits:

It improves problem solving ability thanks to shared contributions;

It promotes diversity and inclusion: in fact, student with different backgrounds, sex and religion share their efforts and develop diversity awareness. In this heterogeneous teams, students learn from each other, learn respect towards others, in short they learn inclusion.

In addition, collaborative learning fosters critical thinking: in fact, my students usually engage in discussions and debates,

analyse ideas and make a decision.

All of this can consume precious curriculum time if teacher not careful and/or experienced in collaborative learning.

First of all, I work with children aged 12 to 15 and those years are particularly difficult when it comes to behaviour. Secondly, this profession consumes a tremendous amount of time and energy. These types of work demand a lot of preparation and that is difficult to do during the school year.

Collaborative learning, or learning in a group setting, has numerous benefits for students. One of the key advantages of collaborative learning is the opportunity for students to engage in active learning, rather than passively receiving information from an instructor. When students work together on tasks or projects, they are able to share their knowledge and skills, leading to a deeper understanding of the material. Additionally, collaborative learning can help students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as they are required to discuss, debate, and analyze information with their peers.

Collaborative learning also promotes social skills and teamwork, as students must collaborate, communicate effectively, and resolve conflicts in order to successfully complete group tasks. This can help students improve their interpersonal skills and build relationships with their peers.

Despite its benefits, collaborative learning also presents some challenges. One common challenge is the potential for unequal participation within the group. Some students may dominate the discussion or workload, while others may struggle to contribute. It is important for instructors to create a supportive and inclusive environment where all students feel comfortable sharing their ideas and opinions.

Another challenge of collaborative learning is the potential for conflict or disagreement among group members. It is essential for students to develop conflict resolution skills and learn how to work effectively with others in order to navigate these challenges.

For me, the biggest challenge of collaborative learning is unequal participation, as I always have one or two students who dominate the discussions, and a majority that contribute less, which leads to an imbalance in effort and learning. This is emphasized by the fact that I teach ESL, which means that students have different sets of skills and knowledge levels when it comes to speaking in class. Finally, I find it difficult to assess individual contribution in a collaborative setting.
