Book: The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle

This picture book illustrates the life cycle of a plant from a tiny seed to a giant flower. The collage artwork is visually engaging and accessible for young learners, including ELLs. The repetitive language and clear sequence of events help build vocabulary related to plant growth (seed, root, stem, leaf, flower). While not explicitly multicultural in its narrative, its universal theme of growth and resilience resonates across cultures. Its simple message about nature's cycle makes it a foundational text for introducing plant parts in a comprehensible way. It can be used for shared reading, vocabulary introduction, and sequencing activities. A true favorite of mine!

Song: "De Colores"

De Colores is a traditional Spanish folk song that celebrates the colors of nature, including flowers and birds. It is a joyful, well-known song in many Spanish-speaking cultures and can be used to connect the beauty of plants to cultural heritage. Singing is an excellent way to build language acquisition for ELLs, providing rhythmic and repetitive exposure to new vocabulary. It can be used as a warm-up activity, a brain break, or to celebrate the colorful diversity of flowers and the world. It provides a direct link to Hispanic culture, which is often represented in our diverse classrooms.

Diverse Seed Packets and Produce from Various Cultures

I love to bring in a variety of seed packets from different types of plants that are culturally significant to my students when we study plants. Seed packets visually show the "seed" part of the plant so we discuss how different seeds grow into different plants that are important for food in various cultures. This is an effective way to make the learning tangible and culturally relevant. It uses students' prior knowledge and experiences with food from their homes, making connections between science concepts and their personal lives. It also promotes multicultural understanding by showcasing the global diversity of plants and their importance in different cuisines. I think this resource is perfect for hands-on exploration, vocabulary building, and fostering discussions about the cultural significance of plants. All aspects my Kindergarten students love!

Book: Growing Vegetable Soup by Lois Ehlert

This book features vibrant, bold illustrations and simple, repetitive text that describes how a family plants and grows a garden to make vegetable soup. It shows the process from seed to harvest and implicitly highlights different plant parts that are eaten - roots, leaves, fruits. The illustrations are clear and support comprehension for ELLs. While the family isn't explicitly diverse, the act of gardening and preparing food is relatable across many cultures. It can be used to reinforce vocabulary, sequence events, and discuss how different plant parts become food. All relevant to our topic on plants.

Book: Wangari's Trees of Peace: A True Story from Africa by Jeanette Winter

This true story tells how Wangari Maathai, a Nobel Peace Prize winner from Kenya, started a movement to plant millions of trees to restore her country's environment. While the focus isn't solely on plant parts, it highlights the importance of trees and the impact of human action on nature. It introduces students to an important figure from Africa and a powerful message about environmental stewardship. For ELLs, the story can be simplified, focusing on the visual narrative of planting and growing. It offers a powerful multicultural perspective on the significance of plants in a community and globally.

I like to put together collection of large, colorful photographs showing diverse gardens and culturally significant plants from various countries and regions. These visuals provide rich context and demonstrate the global presence and importance of plants. For ELLs, these images offer strong visual support for understanding that plants are universal, yet grown and used differently across cultures. They can spark conversations about students' own backgrounds and the plants important to their families. My Kindergarteners have always loved seeing bright colorful images.
