Savory Sticky Rice is a traditional Vietnamese dish made from sticky rice, Chinese sausage, shredded chicken, dried shrimp, fried shallots, and scallions. To make it, the sticky rice is soaked for hours and steamed until soft and fragrant. The Chinese sausage is sliced and pan-fried, the chicken is stir-fried with soy sauce, and the dried shrimp is toasted. These toppings are placed on the rice along with crispy fried shallots and fresh scallions. Savory Sticky Rice tastes savory, fragrant, and slightly sweet from the sausage, with the sticky rice being soft and chewy. It is often enjoyed as a filling breakfast or quick lunch, and I recommend it to foreigners because it perfectly combines flavors and textures, showcasing the uniqueness of Vietnamese street food.

(Gia Bảo)

Xôi gấc is a traditional Vietnamese dish rich in cultural significance, especially during important occasions such as Tet (Lunar New Year). Its vibrant red color not only symbolizes prosperity and good luck but also reflects a strong connection to tradition and ancestors. It is one of the indispensable dishes on the New Year’s feast table for many Vietnamese families. Making xôi gấc is not too complicated. The ingredients include glutinous rice, gac fruit, coconut milk, a bit of rice wine, and salt. After being mixed and steamed, the dish naturally takes on a bright red color. It has the fragrant stickiness of glutinous rice, the mild sweetness of gac, and is often enriched with the creamy taste of coconut milk. I would definitely introduce this dish to foreigners, as it is not only a part of Vietnamese cuisine but also truly delicious. (Bồ nhí Anh Thư)

Bún Chả is a traditional Vietnamese dish made from grilled pork, vermicelli noodles, fresh herbs, pickled vegetables, and a special dipping sauce. To make it, the pork is marinated in a mixture of fish sauce, garlic, sugar, and pepper, then grilled over charcoal until caramelized and smoky.

There are usually two types of pork: sliced pork belly and minced pork patties. The vermicelli noodles are soft and served cold, while the herbs—such as perilla, mint, and lettuce—are fresh and aromatic. The dipping sauce is a balance of sweet, sour, salty, and spicy, made from fish sauce, vinegar or lime juice, sugar, garlic, chili, and a few slices of pickled green papaya or carrot.

These components are served separately so diners can combine them to their taste: dipping the grilled pork into the sauce, mixing it with noodles and herbs for a refreshing, flavorful bite. Bún Chả tastes smoky, tangy, sweet, and herbaceous, with the noodles balancing out the richness of the meat.

It is a popular lunch dish in Hanoi, especially on hot days, and I recommend it to foreigners because it showcases the vibrant balance of Vietnamese cuisine—grilled meat, fresh herbs, and bold dipping sauce.

(Gia Tuấn)

Cá kho is a traditional Vietnamese dish that is especially popular in the countryside and often served during family meals. To make this dish, people usually use catfish or snakehead fish. The fish is first cleaned, cut into pieces, and marinated with fish sauce, sugar, crushed black pepper, minced garlic, chili, and shallots. Then, the fish is placed in a clay pot with coconut water or caramelized sugar to create a beautiful golden color. It is simmered slowly over low heat for several hours so that the flavors can soak deeply into the fish and the sauce becomes thick and rich. The taste of cá kho is savory, slightly sweet, and spicy, with a strong umami flavor. It is usually served with hot steamed rice and sometimes pickled vegetables. I would definitely recommend this dish to foreigners because it shows the heart of Vietnamese home cooking.

Bò lá lốt is a traditional food that comes from southern Vietnam. It is made with ground beef or minced pork, mixed with garlic, lemongrass, shallots, fish sauce, and black pepper. After mixing all the ingredients, the meat is wrapped in lá lốt, which is a type of green leaf with a strong smell and unique taste.

The wrapped rolls are then grilled over charcoal, which gives them a smoky and wonderful aroma. When cooked, the betel leaves become soft and slightly crispy on the outside.

People usually eat bò lá lốt with rice noodles (bún), fresh vegetables, and fish sauce dipping. Sometimes, it is also eaten with rice or inside a roll with rice paper.

What I like most about bò lá lốt is its special flavor. The meat is juicy and tasty, and the smell of the grilled leaves makes it even better.
