I have been involved in 3 Nzreadaloud's. Each time I have been blown away by the engagement of my students. It is like a reading group on steroids! They made real-life connections with the author and were able to regularly question the author about their book-how powerful is that! The walls of my classroom disappeared, experts from the community were accessed, other teachers were contacted. But it was the connection they made with other students across NZ, nothing reinforces learning more than talking with your peers and sharing your learning and thoughts. I would thoroughly recommend giving NZreadaloud a go as it it such an awesome way for our students to connect and share in each others learning.
@mistawilloughby

#NZReadaloud is now an old friend. I started taking part in Term 2 of 2015 and have been part of each one since then. I love the opportunities it offers students for real engagement with literacy. It lifts everyone's expectations of what they can do themselves and what they can do as a group. Modelling of strategies as you read aloud is so amazing and the connections, reflections and wonderings students come up with during the read aloud is unbelievable. It allows to you feel a part of something bigger than yourself and to discover that reading is a shared joy.
@beebryhte - Resource Teacher of Literacy and ex-classroom teacher

I have taken part in two nzrealouds with seniors. Having kiwi stories and classes around the country to discuss ideas with has led to a much deeper understanding by my students. Chatting with others sparks curiosity and students develop questions from collaborating with others. My teaching of shared reading has lifted as I have been inspired by the work of other classes

From its small beginnings in Term 1 2015 to present time, I continue to be excited and inspired by what I see happening in my classroom every time I have done the read aloud. The engagement during reading, the learner driven inquiries, the authentic experiences such as Skyping Park Ranger Mel at Yellowstone Park, connecting with other learners across the country AND the authors of our stories, and the main reason for it all - to model to the children strategies which will help get meaning from text - there is so much to be excited about. My vision was to reimagine the way reading was 'taught'. Could I model strategies through reading aloud and at the same time connect my kids to others around the country so they could build understanding together? YES ... we did it!
And the kids LOVE it!
Kerri Thompson
@kerriattamatea
Teacher, Tamatea Intermediate, Napier

I teach at a small rural school, so one of the things I've found particularly valuable is connecting/collaborating with others who are teaching a similar year level. Getting an insight in to classrooms round NZ has been inspiring and motivating.
As for the kids, they are relishing the fact that other kiwi kids are 'on the same page' at the same time. It seems to engender a higher level of immersion in the texts and lifts learner engagement overall.
NZ ReadAloud is a winner for us!
Mahana Kōtuku (Year 6-8)

Year 7/8 This is my third ReadAloud and i find it a very motivating and team approach to literacy in the classroom. There are so many levels if ability, enthusiasm and prior knowledge in any class - the ReadAloud experience allows ownership for all involved. I find it a very cool way to gel as a class and for learners to interact with each other - no ability or grouping attached. The writing and inquiry involved has also provoked lots of extra and voluntary work from learners at home which is great to see. The written language aspect has been awesome to witness also especially with boys. THEY WANT THE NEXT CHAPTER, THE NEXT TASK....the discussion around volcanic activity and techtonic plates today for example was great - following this morning's 7.1 earthquake. A fantastic thing to be part of.
Louise Gray
Teacher
Taradale Intermediate School
