I think never judge a book by it's cover is a good theme to describe this book so far. (Anderson pg.105) states that Topher begs with his eyes to go with brand. Topher is a helpful guy and Brand is underestimating Topher. Topher always has helped people out which can help Brand out especially if it is more of a harder mission. Also they are good friends so Brand should be able to trust him. These pieces of evidence help prove that never judge a book by it's cover is a good theme for this book.

I chose "Never judge a book by its cover" Here's why, so when the foster family got Carley she looked mean. (Hunt pg 5) it shows that "they saw her and still treated her their own kid" Even though they could not see into her mind, they could not find out what had happened to her. But they took her in, open arms. And because of that now she is feeling like this is her home and her family. That is why you never judge a book by its cover, you never know how they will turn out or really be under their appearance.

The theme of the story Fish In A Tree is don't judge a book by its cover. This is because Ally gets judged for not being able to read. Even though Ally is really creative and a great artist. An example of this is when Mr. Daniels tells Ally that she thinks outside of the box. "That's clever Ally, he tells me. I actually like that you chose someone who isn't a book character, exactly you think outside of the box" (Hunt pg 129). This shows the theme because even though she can't read she thinks differently than other people which is sometimes an advantage.

One theme for One for the Murphys is never judge a book by its cover. This theme connects to the book when a foster girl named Carley is about to go into a foster home and Carley assumes that they are going to be bad foster parents. She shows this one page 3 "I have read the books and seen the movies. I know what foster parents are like. They smoke cigars and feed you saltines" (Hunt pg.3). This shows that she assumed that the foster family was not going to be good. Although as the book goes on she gets to know the family more and likes them more.

One theme in "Refugee" is "Tough times don't last but tough people do". One time this is shown in my book is when Mahmoud needs to sleep but there is no room in the hotels. But they keep on looking for shelter. He ends up finding a kid who knows a place where they can sleep with shelter. They end up sleeping well that night (Alan Gratz pg. 107). this shows us that when things get tough you show know that you are tougher and you can get through it.

For example when Mahmoud had to stay on a boat for at least 10 hours while they were traveling to Turkey (Gratz p. 145). Another example is when Isabel had to be really patient when her family was trying to stop her from drowning and get her on the boat (Gratz p.138). An example for Josef is when he had to wait a long time for the doctor to approve them to get into Cuba
(Gratz p.133).

I say this because there supposed to be going through a "shortcut" but where there going is actually where the fuzzy mud is located. She is the lonely lion because she only is going with 3 people and if she was a famous sheep she would have went with many people and all those people can be seriously injured.

A theme I think keeps happening is "Treat Others the Way you want to be Treated".
I chose this theme because it keeps repeating over and over. Like when Carley ran away on Hunt pg.41. She took that for granted and just didn't care but she was really hurt. In the book it also said that " I was standing holding the CD behind me." She just skipped school to go somewhere and didn't think of the consequences on Hunt pg. 54. All of those examples show that Carley just kind of took things for granted and didn't really appreciate everything Mrs. Murphy was doing for her. She bought her clothes and made sure she felt ok and comfortable. She also wanted to make her feel like she belonged.

The theme I picked for the book Refugee is Patience is a virtue. An example where the book shows this theme is true is when Mahmoud and his family had to wait for the escape boat in Turkey to get to Greece. (Gratz p. 128) Mahmoud and his family were supposed to leave a long time ago but the boat kept on getting delayed and they suffered trying to find shelter. Than finally after waiting days the boat arrived and they got to leave Turkey on it. This shows that patience is a virtue because if Mahmoud and his family gave up and tried to find another way to leave they would have never gotten on to the boat. There are many other examples in the book where it shows the theme. That is why I think the theme is patience is a virtue.

I think a good theme for Mrs. Bixby's last day is to never give up. Topher, Brand and Steve are determined to make Mrs. Bixbys last day special and they never give up even though they are met with many challenges. They make a crazy plan, skip school, and have many things go wrong along the way trying to get to the hospital. Each time something goes wrong, they never give up and end up giving Mrs. Bixby a great day. One example of not giving up is on page 113 when the boys miss their bus because the scary bookstore owner keeps them too long and they realize they will have to find a new way to get there. But they know they have to continue to make sure they complete their mission of giving Ms. Bixby the best day with all of their gifts.
