It is the idea of knowledge beyond what your 5 senses can detect, it is heavily influenced by faith and religion.

Romanticism Similarities:
(1) Started in the same time period (1840-1860)
(2) Reverence for Nature

Romanticism Differences:
(1a) Transcendentalism is heavily based on the idea of god is the internal force of life and is made from his creation.
(1b) Romanticism has god viewed as a external force, it has less to do with the belief of god and more of the human spirit. The thought of  valuing feeling and intuition over reason and logic.
(2a) Transcendentalism views the ultimate goodness of people and focuses on the ¨inner light¨ of people.
(2b) Romanticism focuses on the effects of guilt, sin, and misery, the darker side of people.

Ralph Waldo Emerson: American lecturer, poet, and essayist, the leading exponent of New England Transcendentalism.

Their philosophical and literary contributions to Transcendentalism was that Thoreau and the Transcendentalist movement in New England grew up together. Transcendentalism began as a radical religious movement, opposed to the rationalist, conservative institution that Unitarianism had become. For Emerson led the transcendentalist movement in the 19th century.
