The light shed on their previous friendship turned rivalry amidst the social reaction and bias towards homosexuals and gay rights allowed for a more personal understanding of the parties. While the play gave us details and understanding of the court proceedings, the video included more social context and exactly what it looked like when Harry Britt (Milks successor) said, "we will never forget," hinting at the violence and protests that ensued (151).

Their polarizing politics explains why their murders were very important politically and why many saw the murders as more than a personal attack by Dan White.

It is when liberal people try to extend rights to all, such as Supervisor Milk and the Mayor, who tried tirelessly to secure rights for gay and black citizens, that white conservatives feel their privilege most threatened.
