Living in a pre-planned capital city (of Gujarat, India) Gandhinagar, to me strategic planning can be about a new city with a specific vision. This city was intentionally planned (in 1996) as a state capital and administrative hub for the government, currently home to 4 lakh people. It’s aim is reflected in its orthogonal grid based plan; which is inspired from Chandigarh, a city designed by le Corbusier. 

On the other hand taking the example of the sister Ahmedabad, a dense metro city (over 8p lakh population) evolved radially around a 16th CE Mughal settlement. In this case strategic planning can be a tool to resolve functional urban issues like congestion, density etc.

(a)  What is strategic planning?


I am using examples of my city and its sister city in India.

Living in a pre-planned capital city (of Gujarat, India) Gandhinagar, to me strategic planning can be about shaping a new city with a specific vision. This city was intentionally planned (in 1966) as the state capital and an administrative hub for the government, currently home to 4 lakh people. Its aim is reflected in its orthogonal grid-based plan; which is inspired by Chandigarh, a city designed by Le Corbusier. 

On the other hand, taking the example of the sister city Ahmedabad, a dense metro-city (over 80 lakh population) evolved radially around a 16th-century Mughal settlement. In this case, strategic planning can be a tool to resolve functional urban issues like congestion, density, lack of connectivity, etc.

Hence strategic planning can be a tool to form new cities with a specific aim or can help to overcome urban issues in organically (over time) formed cities

What are three key strategic planning issues that impact you and why?

Traffic (ironically a new issue for this small city), sanitation and other services, and open community spaces are three primary issues.

The city of Gandhinagar has always been referred to as “the green city of India” but recently to accommodate the needs of the increasing population the city is rapidly losing its green cover. The identity of the city can be saved or restored if these primary components of the city are reimagined (with alternative planning and design interventions). 

What do you think strategic planning can do to address the issues you have identified? 

I think through strategic planning one can gather or categorize the relevant data, analyze it, Identify existing problems or foresee potential future issues and come up with efficient solutions or interventions to overcome those challenges. 

In the case of my city (Gandhinagar, Gujarat), strategic planning can help identify the ecologically/environmentally reach zones and guide the future urban developments in a sustainable way.

Those digital implications aids connection between people and their living environment. However, I still think there is a long way for our planet to have a single so called ‘Smart City’, simply because we are held back by our ability and freedom to achieve the total fusion of technology to make it work for people.
