Week 6 Algae by MOOCBBEI

Algae is the theme. Give algae a role in the biobased city. Where can they be produced, on which waste streams, for what kind of products? Try to connect this to the biorefinery theme and energy theme.

Algae in landscape design

In our biobased city algae are a part of the landscape design, architecture and communities. Like the modular algae platform pier system created by Aaron Ramos. The algae can grow on wastewater from the households and agro-industry. At the end of the chain there is the wastewater from e.g. the spirulina production that can be totally purified with duckweed (it can purify the heavy metals). Duckweed can be used for bio-ethanol, feed, proteins, biogas.

More examples of algae in landscape design you can see on

http://www.algaecompetition.com/algae-competition/1design/entries-1landscape/ (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

I would like to see a combined photo voltaic panel system and an algae production system on the roof or on the walls of the buildings. the green colour of algae looks far better than the solar panels....the algae growth could be on a local level, per household or per street or housing complex. and the sewage taken up for it, so it would have a local cleaning water supply. especially in regions were water is scarce...

I think it would be a good idea if the city would utilize the nutrient rich waste streams from household and factories to feed the algae. The algae could then be used to produce fuel or feed. This process would not only be a sustainable solution for energy and food demand, but would also help to keep the water clean.
