The unmarried Roman girls were only allowed to wear tunic's alone. They wore tunic's because the weren't married and also with varying length depending on their usage. The Roman girls weren't the only ones who wore tunic's. The Roman men wore them as well but they didn't show them because they wore them under their toga's. When there is cold weather in Ancient Rome they were up to 2 or 3 tunic's to keep them warm. The tunic's were typically longer than the men's
http://www.historyforkids.net/roman-clothing.html

The Roman Women dressed the way they did because they were representing what they were for example married and not married. The married women wore stola's and the unmarried girls/ women wore tunic's. They did this so all of the other roman men and women knew what they were. Also so the roman men knew how to find their wife faster. But the unmarried didn't have to worry about any of that because they weren't married. When the unmarried women in Rome do get married instead of wearing tunic's they now get to wear stola's
