On January 18 afternoon, our class visited the Brick Lane to show how multiculturalism affects this area and how people from France and Bangladesh lived in Brick Lane. Before we visited the Brick Lane, I did not think this is the integration success that they open shops on the streets, since they mainly sell goods and products from their home country. However, I realized the market that has over thousands of shops would let different ethnic people know about their culture and food.

After the Brick Lane walks, we had a poster presentation assignment regarding on multiculturalism. The most challenging things for this poster are most of the statistical numbers are based on city or even country, such as Islam population in the United Kingdom or London. Finding some data regarding East End is complicated. Because of this reason, I tend to give up this topic and discussed with our group members to tried to find a new topic for our group’s poster presentation. However, I believed this task could improve my skills on research method. Therefore, our group did not change the topic, and I spend lots of time on research.

After having this poster presentation, I think I have slightly improved my skills in research method since I have to search different websites online and also need to skim the texts to find some useful information. This means that I am able to examine more harder topics or understand academic articles more. I believed this skill is very useful to me as a pre-master student because research method can make it easier for me to find the texts I am looking for and allows me to understand the texts more effectively.

For research projects in the future, I will use the research method that professors taught us to help me finish my assignments, and in the meantime, I also need to read more articles for practice in order to improve my skills of research methods.

Article 1 - "Macao" by Tang and S

Summary:
The article "Macao" written by Tang and Sheng using radical political transformation, the rapid economic growth, physical expansion and the consequent social and environmental challenges to analyzing and discussing Macao's past, present and future planning. Macao was colonized by Portugal until 20 December 1999, in order to let China and Macao facing the issue of reunion, Deng Xiaoping who is a leader of People's republic of China was innovative a policy called "one country two system". This policy is keep Macao and Hong Kong remain unchanged for 50 years as colonized period, such as economic system, legal system monetary system, and immigration policy, and so on. The authors believed that Macau's rapid economic growth can due to two comparative advantages, the first one is Macau is the only city in China to permit gambling, this attracts lots of tourism to visits Macao, and lead Macao as the the first gaming market in the world, the second comparative advantage is conservation of its historic city, Macao has lots of building and monuments have historic background, and these building has been well protected by government. However, Macao cannot be seen as a well developed city because Macao lack of qualified professional, congested traffic lack of comprehensive urban and environmental planning. Tang and Sheng did a research about Macao's government planning about these issues, the planning are include to have light rail transit system, and provide more parking slots in Macao in order to solve the congested traffic, and Macao has issuing the new gaming licenses to prevent build more casinos and slow down the casino boom in order to prepare the new urban planning strategies.

Reflection:
It is quite interesting article that discussing variety aspects of Macao. At the beginning of the reading, I did quickly scamming the sub-title to have a basic idea about the contents of the article. I did very read carefully when I read the first four pages, but after that, I began to feel little bit frustrate due to the length of the article and some words that I do not know the meaning, but I did keeping reading it by keep forcing myself to read slowly, and to check the definition of the words. Next time, maybe I can provide more notes on the article, because notes can help me more underestand the article better and tried to summarize the main function of each paragraph.

This website provides seven tipis for how to read a text and read faster, the seven tips which are preview the text, plan your attack, be mindful, don't read every word, don't read every section, write a summary and practice time runs. I do agree that preview the text and don't read every word is important for reading a longer text, and practice timed runs can help me keeping the time, especially when I am writing the exam and need to read a longer text, I definitely do not want to spend lots of times on reading when writing an exam. Besides, write a summary can also be helpful to understand well about the text. However, I do not agree the tip that about dont read every section. Because I believed every section have its own importance, and the section will also related to the thesis statement. We can skip the section when we are writing the summary of article, but i think it is still useful to read every section.

Article 3 - Written by Junsen Zhang

Summary: In this paper, "The evolution of China's one-child policy and its effects on Family outcomes" written by Junsen Zhang, using four different approaches and one microeconomic evidence to discuss the effects of one-child policy on varies aspects, which are fertility, child education, and other family outcomes, such as divorce. According to this paper, the idea of family planning was presence on 1956, but since Mao, who is the supreme Chinese leader always believed that large population was better. After the 1969, the China's population population has exceed 800 million, leading to the stagnation of economic growth, then Mao believed that overpopulation need to be controlled. However, at the beginning of the one-child policy implented, lots of rural family against this policy, since rural family need more children, especially more boys to support the family in order to have more producitivty on farming. When facing this issue, China's government has adjusted the one-child policy that rural family and other exception cases can have more than one child, if the first children is a girl. The other issue of one-child policy is the penalty and the power of execution are different between each cities, this makes the local government feel that the central government does not care much about this policy, and leading to the population increase again.
Authors believed that the one-child policy can improve the education level in China since parent will spend more time and money on one child, and this policy will also decrease the divorce rate.

Reflection: I think I did improving on reading academic article by trying to write down the function of paragraph and some notes about this article, because this can help me focus on this article, and read carefully. However, when I am reading the four approaches about the evidence on the affect of one-child policy, it is quite boring, and I did tried to skip some of them at first, but later, I tried to come down by myself can read.
