IEP refers to the Individualized Education Program. This outlines a student's disability, their education and behavior goals, modifications, accommodations, and who is required to provide each service.

ADA refers to the American Disabilities Act of 1990 that prevents discrimination based on disabilities in society, work, and school.

LRE refers to Least Restrictive Environment. This ensures that students are placed in an appropriate setting that allows them to access curriculum material and succeed in it with additional supports. It is imperative that this is the least restrictive environment possible as FAPE affirms that students are entitled to a public school education and should be in the general education classroom as much as is appropriate for them.

ADD refers to Attention Deficit Disorder. This identification is given to people who demonstrate symptoms consistent with ADD. This was oftentimes given to people who did not display the hyperactive components associated with ADHD, but, with the DSM V, was combined with ADHD. Technically, ADD is an outdated term.

ADHD refers to attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. This label is split into combined, dominantly inattentive, or dominantly hyperactive. Students with this label tend to experience impairments in development or daily life to due deficits in attention, hyperactivity, and/or poor impulse control.

ASL refers to American Sign Language, which is a visual language used by and designed for the deaf and hard of hearing communities. It is important to clarify that this is American Sign Language, not English Sign Language, as sign languages vary across countries and cultures.

FERPA refers to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. FERPA protects students education records from outside parties while also allowing the student and parent access to the student's education records. FERPA also allows parents to challenge contents of the education record.

ID refers to Intellectual Disability.

FAPE refers to the legal right maintained by all students with disabilities to receive a free appropriate education. FAPE was first passed as part of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act in 1975, and has since been updated with its last modification in 2004. FAPE guarantees that students with disabilities can access public school, just as everyone else, while receiving services to their individual need to prepare them for the future at no additional cost to their families.

IDEA refers to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. This federal law mandates a FAPE for all students with disabilities, especially those in public or federally funded schools. With IDEA came the IEP.
