The Demographic Dividend is the accelerated economic growth that can happen when a population has many working age people due to a decline in fertility and mortality rates, and governments ensure that those workers are empowered, educated and employed.

It links to the population topic in Geography as it is the result of a change in the age structure of a country's population, and this is typically brought by a decline in mortality and fertility rates. It is also a big part in economic development as the labour force is bigger, this also leads to climate change as more fossil fuels and energy has to be used for factories and different businesses to run smoothly.

The demographic dividend is when the population structure in a country changes due to a reduced birth rate - resulting in an increase in economically active young people and a decrease in dependents - there is a period of time where the country can experience massive economic growth due to the potential of increased productivity.
It ties in closely with the DTM as it aids the transition between various stages (usually stage 3 to 4). However, the increase in economic development may increase that country's impact on climate change as industrialisation intensifies the levels of pollution.

The demographic divided is The economic growth can result from favorable changes in the countries age structure eg. Less dependents compared to non-dependents. To achieve this governments must focus on empowerment, health, quality of education and employment opportunities.

The demographic dividend links to access to water resources due to the fact that many countries develop along rivers or coasts. This also means that transportation will become easier and this will let the economy develop at a faster rate. Therefore a country may go through their demographic dividend faster if they are located near water sources.
