China's participation in the Korean War in 1950 changed the direction of the fighting by pushing U.S. and U.N. forces back down the Korean Peninsula. Before China had gotten involved, North Korea had been losing badly, but their soldiers were helping to stop the enemy from taking over completely, causing the war to drag on with no clear winner. Instead of the clear victory that everyone had hoped for,China's actions had worsened tensions between the U.S. and communist countries, adding to the Cold War strain.

Before this, the Soviet Union had also launched their very first spacecraft, the (Sputnik) to prove that they were ahead in space, but the Exploer 1 had helped the U.S. catch up. It was also important because it helped scientists discover the Van Allen radiation belts, areas in space filled with radiation that could harm space travel, making future missions safer.

The Korean War began in 1950, when North Korea had suddenly attacked South Korea in an attempt to take over the whole country. This had been one of the first large conflicts of the Cold War, with the United States and other nations coming to help South Korea stop the communist threats. As a result, the war had showed the strength of U.S. and the allied military forces in stopping the spread of communism and protecting smaller nations from being taken over.

In 1954 the Army-McCarthy hearings had broadcast to the entire nation on live television Senator Joseph McCarthy's aggressive and unfair questioning style. Millions watched as, not only did McCarthy fail to produce real evidence of communist infiltration in the U.S. Army, but he looked reckless and dishonest. By the end of the hearings the Senate had officially censured him and he was brought down and McCarthyism was done for.

In 1947, President Truman had created the Loyalty Review Board to investigate whether certain government workers were being loyal to the United States. Several individuals had charged, and some were even dismissed from their jobs without any substantial evidence of wrongdoing. This indicates the level of fear Americans once had about communism, which produced many unfair accusations and worsened the Red Scare.

In 1953, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were sentenced to death for spying for the Soviet Union during the Cold War. The trial was quite controversial, and some people thought that they had been punished too harshly with insufficient evidence. The execution of the two in 1953 showed how far the U.S. would go in its effort to prevent the spread of communism and how much the Soviet threat had frightened everyone.
