We will be reviewing mean, medium, mode and range by collecting data on ones ability to blow bubbles. So get ready to put your thinking caps on and show us your best bubble skills!

Lets take a moment to review our definition of terms.
What is MEAN? Mean is the "average". If your recall, this is where we add all the numbers and divide by the total number of numbers.
What is Median? Median is the "middle" number. If numbers are listed from smallest to largest, the middle number is what we refer to as the median.
What is Mode? Mode is the number most often "repeated."
Lastly, what is Range? The range is the "difference" between the largest and smallest number. The easiest way to determine the range is to subtract the smallest number from the largest number.

Have you ever wondered if the outcome of something would have been different had people or ancient civilizations known what we know today? It is important we know the history and prior applications of a process in order to better understand it's current applications. Knowing the history and the obstacles that people faced in the past, can serve as a guide or inspiration for the obstacles and challenges you may be faced with. According to Hacking and Rubin, here are some historical examples of when estimation was first used:
An old Indian story tells of a man counting the leaves and fruit on two large branches of a fruiting tree to determine if there would be enough food to feed his family. Estimation has also been used in an attempt to determine the number of generations between the first King of Egypt and the last King. Lastly, the Athenians calculated the number of ladders needed to scale the enemy's walls.
These are just a few examples of how estimation also known as "mean" or average has been used in history.

Yes! You can expect to see this again on your bench mark exams as well as the AZMERIT. It corresponds with the standard 6.SP.A.3 Recognize that a measure of center for a numerical data set summarizes all of its values with a single number, while a measure of variation uses a single number to describe the spread of the data set.
It is imperative that you make good use of your time and ask questions if you are unsure of something or need additional help.
