This photo is particularly fun due to the expressions of the subjects. Their movements are dynamic and interesting- more importantly, they're a form of fast movement. From the jump to the way hair moves and is frozen in the photo, the quickest speed is the best way to capture the fun moment in clarity.

This photographer used a shutter speed of 1/250th of a second. The aperture setting was f/6.8. The ISO setting was 400. The fast shutter speed allows the movement of the divers and the escaping air bubbles to be frozen.

Slow Shutter Speed

This is a photo of the Old Mumbai Pune Highway. The photographer is Kshitij Lawate. The took this photo with a Nikon D5200, without a tripod with the camera resting on the bridge itself. This was a 20/1 second shutter speed. allowing the motion of the lights to blur. The fact that it was a night photo probably points to a lower ISO setting and a lower f/stop aperture number.

The camera has a series of priority settings programed into the camera in order to help the photographer capture best what they would like to capture. The Shutter Priority setting is accessed by turning the priority dial to the "S." When the shutter speed is changed, photos of the same subjects doing the same actions became more sharp and focused, with little details able to be seen more. I saw the aperture and the ISO numbers adjust themselves by the camera in oder to be best able to capture the subjects moving and frozen in the air.

The shutter priority setting is probably going to be prefered whenever you want to capture a quick moment in time. By speeding up the shutter speed there is less time that the camera is exposed to light, allowing the photos to appear less washed out and sharp. You would want to use the shutter priority setting when you want to capture a moment midair- like we did with he jumping, or an athlete in the action. Dancing, running, and other fast moving activities are best captured with the shutter priority.
