Zafon uses personification when he says, "Every time a book changes hands, every time someone runs his hands down its pages, its spirit grows and strengthens." The purpose is to portray the power and influence that a book can have over a person's life by saying that the book has a spirit and the spirit can strengthen. By saying it has a spirit, it allows the reader to understand just how powerful and life changing a book can be in a person's life. People usually have this type of effect on others, but by giving the human like qualities to the book, the reader gets this feeling from books too.

Zafron uses personification when he says "I asked my father whether heaven was crying, he couldn't bring himself to reply." The purpose of using this is to show that the child is very innocent because he thinks heaven is crying. Also, it shows that people are very sad that his mother has died. He used the literary device to help me understand the mood by having a little kid ask if people are sad that his mother has died. This is showing a grim and depressed mood. By saying heaven is crying he inferring that she has gone to heaven and heaven is sad that she is leaving earth because he does not understand what heaven is.

Zafon uses personification when he says, "We walked through the streets of Barcelona trapped beneath ashen skies as dawn poured over Rambla de Santa Monica in a wreath of liquid copper." The purpose is to show that it was like a old road that was all broken up and they feel trapped due to the wreath because the wreath is like a rotation of a circle and its all copper. It also gives a gloomy mood.

Zafon uses a simile when he says, "My father sighed, hiding behind the sad smile that followed him like a shadow through life." The purpose of this simile is to show how depressed the father feels about his son's comment about his wife. This helps the reader better understand the text by describing the fake emotions the father had to show throughout his daily life while still holding on to the hate and pain of his wife's death. This helps set the mood of dreadfulness, sorrow, and gloom.

Zafron uses a metaphor when he says, "I followed my father through that narrow lane, more of a scar than a street". The purpose of this metaphor is to compare a scar to a street and to show the street has a tense nervous feeling when walking. By comparing the street to a scar it changes the reader's perspective to a much negative look. A scar usually happens from a bad incident with that being said while walking down the narrow street the more bad and nervous feelings the writer got.
