In XVI centuries London became an important city; the population increased from 50,000 in 1500 to 50,000. The growth of London played an important part in making England a united money economy. London was also the center of a flourishing printing and publishing trade. These books and pamphlets circulated throughout the country. The monarch and bishops made efforts to censor the output of the presses, but were never completely successfully. During the 1640's censorship collapsed altogether and was only partially re-established at the Restoration. In England only 8% of the population lived in the citys.

For much of the sixteenth century England and Scotland hated each other with all the passion of warring neighbours. Yet in 1603 a Scottish king would ascend the English throne with the connivance and general approval of the English ruling elite. There was little that bound together the English aristocracy and the Scottish king, for whom they developed a profound distaste, than a shared commitment to Protestantism. The faith would become so deeply ingrained that in the seventeenth century the nations would defend their religious affinity with a passion that verged on bigotry.

Initially Henry VIII defended Christian religion and the pope gave him the title of defender of faith. Subsequently, when he wanted to release his marriage, he goes against Christian ideals and approaches Protestants. In 1532, the Church's powers diminished, becoming a religious leader, and took much of his land to eliminating the monasteries. When Henry VIII died in 1547 he became King Edward IV who sought to establish a Protestant religious policy. At his early death became Queen her sister Mary thatmarried with Philip of Spain. Mary brought Catholicism back to England and English Protestantism was reduced to a persecuted residue.
