Path Feel is the winner in the Most Promising Idea category. The product, designed by Katlyn Green, is a shoe insole that provides vibratory feedback to improve balance among older adults. The insoles amplify the sense of touch of feet to the ground to accommodate sensory deficits or general balance issues. The insoles help the user identify when their feet touch the ground, reducing the sense of imbalance and incidence of falls.

Lisa Pope was a Master's student working on a degree in Innovation Design Engineering when she came up with the idea for Path Find and later Path Feel. Lisa had watched her father with Parkinson's disease struggle with his balance while standing and walking, this inspired the product Path Feel, shown here. Lisa is the founder of Walk With Path, a healthcare company comprised of a multidisciplinary, innovative team (Kristoff, A. , 2018).
"Walk With Path is a healthcare company focused on injury prevention, improved mobility and user-centered design and intervention. Our products offer opportunities within therapeutic intervention as medical devices to prevent falls. Not only will this reduce the risk of injury, but also improve confidence when walking and ultimately help individuals maintain their independence and quality of life for longer" (https://walkwithpatch.com/ourstory).

I believe there are great possibilities for this current innovation, not only for fall prevention and balance, but maybe the technology could be extrapolated to other areas such as assisting patients recovering from stokes with decreased hand-to-eye coordination and other deficits. As the technology is developed and improved it will be interesting to see how it evolves. The research so far is promising and interesting, but more is needed.
As a Certified Rehabilitation RN, I know the challenges faced by post CVA and TBI patients as well as patients with diabetic neuropathy with balance problems. As survivors begin their journey to recovery, they will be at an increased risk for fall and further injury. Helping those recovering to have increased confidence and possibly more independence might be a great benefit of Path Feel.
