I am a huge fan of Carl Rodgers ideas of unconditional positive regard and feel hit is the most effective method of change for teens. I was excited to see patience with students explored. I find that understanding the change is a process with many ups and downs for both my students and myself invaluable. I have learned to see growth as a marathon and not a sprint. This really was articulated well in the source. My understanding of self in one that is constantly evolving. As I have gotten older and especially as I was raising my children, my awareness of imposing my own value system on others has drastically decreased.

I currently think about a lot. I have started this week to schedule in my calendar time that I will participate in activities that are not school related and I intrinsically enjoy. In the past I would put off still summer this kind of plan. I enjoy yoga and pickle ball and have blocked off time 3-4 times a week to engage in them. I also am approaching my tasks at school as a work smarter not harder. I have now employed a digital platform for test and quizzes that cuts down on manual paper grading and looking for activities and lessons that help put students gain ownership of their own learning.

Appreciate that within the ethical guidelines for school counselors it specifically states the importance of self care and how a lack of it could lead to lesser outcomes to those we are trying to help. I have in the past taken on the responsibility of trying to help my students to the point that I was enabling them and also neglecting my own health and mental well being.

These sources really solidified for me the importance of boundaries and maintaining my own self care in working with students. Not only does this approach make me more effective and allow me to model a healthy lifestyle, but also allows my students to have ownership of their own journey.
