In English this means rebirth. It was originally a French word that was used to describe this time from the late 1300 to the 1600s. During this time there was a great revival in art and learning. They believed that for far too long knowledge and learning was being restricted by the Catholic Church. People wanted to study the writings, art, science and philosophy of the Ancient Greeks and Romans and lived the way they did. They also wanted the freedom to learn more about the world around them. Also some people began to question the authority of the Church and their faith in God after seeing so much suffering during the Black Death.

Think about the word Renaissance?
