He was born as an illegitimate child, which means that his parents weren't married at the time of his birth. His father, Roger Gerard, was a priest and his mother, Margaret, was the daughter of a physician. Though coming from a fairly non-powerful family, he became a big deal during the Renaissance. He was offered positions in the church many times but often declined because at the time he wasn't interested in showing that he had followed any religion.

He had eventually taken up on the offer and spent time in a religious order, remaining a monastery under a superior. He later left and studied theology in Paris and had come in contacted with English students, who invited him to England at the age of 33. John Colet, Sir Thomas More, John Fisher, and Archbishop Warhamwhile were the four people that he became friends with. They were interested in reviving Greek and Latin classics so while he was with these people he had realized that philological methodology could help out the church. He wasn't trying to establish religious scriptures, but he was trying to make them more obtainable and understandable. On the 12th of july 1536 he became ill and died from an attack of dysentery.
